Historia
Edsel Bronfman works as a junior executive shipping clerk for an importer of Korean flatware. He lives in a seedy neighborhood and spends his free time with his spirited mother. Things happen to other people, and Bronfman knows it. Until, that is, he gets a call from operator 61217 telling him that he's won a free weekend at a beachfront condo in Destin, Florida. But there's a catch: The offer is intended for a couple, and Bronfman has only 79 days to find someone to take with him.

A wonderful, funny novel
Revisado: 04-17-25
This was a character-driven story with well-developed characters who find themselves in hilarious situations, handling the most bizarre situations with kindness and humanity. The major dramatic question is: who will Ed invite to spend a long weekend with him? The theme, forming relationships in the modern world is difficult, causes the reader to assess their own priorities in relationship building. I hope the author returns with book #2, using the same characters.

Historia
Three Brothers from Virginia tells the tale of Matt and his two enslaved brothers, Paul and Luke, who thrive upon their insulated Virginia farm until the Civil War forces them to stare into the face of a reality they so long eluded. As Paul flees to New York, Matt joins the Confederate army, and Luke remains a slave, the brothers are thrown into sweeping battles, riots, and a cloud of enmity, their values and lives tested by a festering intolerance that threatens the only truth they ever knew.

Revisado: 03-15-25
Overall, this historical fiction novel was an interesting audible book. In certain parts, I felt the dialogue was preachy, when show-don’t-tell should have been the author’s mantra. Also, the sudden healing of one of the character’s PTSD seemed a bit too convenient to just keep the plot going. Finally, it seemed like the two themes in the book: blood is thicker than water and everyone deserves freedom seemed as if they were at odds with one another. I don’t want to ruin the end, but I didn’t wanted a different resolution. Still, I’d recommend this book with 4/5 stars.

Historia
The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?

Interesting

Worth the time to listen. In this book, the listener finds interesting information and initiatives are suggested for all of us. I just wish there had been a more about the banking industry and its part in treating those with money differently than those without.

Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

So much history and food for thought
Revisado: 07-28-24
Although I didn’t agree with everything, this book is a very good analysis of the recent church history and the reasons Christianity and church attendance have suffered in this country. It was refreshing to hear some Biblical preaching that resonates with the Christian values of the church I knew as a child. The church needs to hear the truth about the perceptions currently held about church-going folks, and individuals need to search their souls for a way to shine rather than simply be a member of a tribe and ardently protect that membership at all costs.
I remember as a college student the first time a Republican voting pamphlet was passed out in the church I had been attending. Such pamphlets have no place in church. We started judging others instead of reflecting on our own behavior. Then Christians excused certain politicians immoral choices. Now we are at the end of that path with more and more people excusing themselves from the church pew, including myself.

Javier Perez is a hustler from a family of hustlers. He learns from an early age how to play the game to his own advantage, how his background—murdered drug dealer dad, single cash-strapped mom, best friend serving time for gang activity—can be a key to doors he didn’t even know existed. This kind of story, molded in the right way, is just what college admissions committees are looking for, and a full academic scholarship to a prestigious university brings Javi one step closer to his dream of becoming a famous writer.

Felt conflicted but that’s what books are meant to do
Revisado: 07-15-24
First, I want to say in my non-fiction reading, I love books like Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson and Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. This book proposes the simple life, the one that affords shelter, food, and even a very small nuclear family with love is all one needs. Fame, money. and outside recognition are not needed and may cause unhappiness. This book proposes we should grow where we are planted. I agree. However, I am still left with the argument that we can’t allow the level of greed in our society that allows the haves to suppress the have-nots. This book is thought provoking. Don’t stop listening or reading. The end provides food for thought.

This is written with many layers of meaning. Hence, the book is rightfully named. The readers are excellent in pace and in exemplifying the characters. At first, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep the many characters straight while listening, but I had no problem following, due to the excellent story telling.

Scalzi had fun writing this one!
Revisado: 03-27-22
Scalzi had fun writing this one, and a reader could tell. This is an exciting and funny story with characters who will make anyone with a smidge of humor laugh aloud occasionally. Of course, a story without tense moments is boring, so expect to stop laughing and worry a bit in those parts of the novel. I’ve read every Scalzi novel, I think, and I enjoyed this one the most. He gets better and better.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Mixed with memoir & backed by stacked research
Revisado: 07-13-19
J.D. Vance intersperses his own upbringing with stacked research to excuse his family's actions and how they became who they are,. This book says little about how to move forward as Americans. Vance uses his ancestory as an excuse for family problems. Vance joins the military and breaks with his family's addiction and ancestral violance, but gives little credit to anyone who helped him along the way, except his grandmother. This book perpetuates the theory that a person can pull himself up by the bootstraps, and does not promote empathy for those who need it.
