Excellent story with a mediocre narrator

I love Jane Austen, and the story itself kept me listening, but this narrator is so affected that I was tempted to quit. She mispronounces so many words and names that should be common enough for her to get correct, that I cannot account for it. No one, not even the British, pronounces the word "obliged" as "ahblahged," nor "curacy" as "cooracy". The name "Benwick", she pronounced as it looks, but the British pronunciation is "Ben 'ick", which you would think someone "classically trained at the Riverside Shakespeare Academy" ought to know. I do appreciate that she attempted different voices for the different characters, and she has very good enunciation of most words, but these mispronunciations of common words were distracting. When I listen again, and I always come back to Jane Austen, I will look for a different narrator.

JBP does it again as he elucidates how to make our lives better. Great to have it read by the author.

I can only assume those who rate it 1 star haven't read it as their complaints are flat out lies. McCullough tells the story of these people, good and bad, in an engaging way. Well done.

We, who most get our news from tv, print, or social media, need to move past our myopic vision and broaden our perspective. Things are not as bad as they seem. This book does an excellent job of explaining how far we have come in a short amount of time and why we can be hopeful that the future will be better.

This could be good, but the narrator is unskilled at reading aloud. Her frequent mispronunciation of English words, and her halting and stilted cadence in English is annoying. I realize Chinese has different cadences than English, but when she is just narrating a description of scene, her English cadence should be better. The story is interesting and kind of a guilty pleasure, but the writing is pretty amateurish and full of clichés that a more skilled writer would have avoided. I loved the movie, so I thought I'd give this a try, and while I enjoyed the story overall, I don't think I could every listen again.

At first, the narrator bothered me, but I now see how perfect his voice was for this book. I did knock off one point for the quality of the recording, but it wasn't so bad that it ruined the story for me.

More importantly, this is such a well crafted story, and Green understood better than most how to tell the truth about the Christian life. Powerful, not preachy.

I love the poem but found Louise Gluck's monotone narration really annoying. The three other narrators were excellent.

I usually enjoy Henty stories. This one requires putting aside some modern feelings about our past to see the South as it was both good and bad. Unfortunately, Hodges' mispronunciation of several words and strange cadence was distracting.

I have enjoyed this story but this particular rendition by Bolen, while better than the other offered by Audible, is not great. I find his rendition of a Danish accent annoying and distracting.
