Historia
Los Angeles, 1920s: Socialite Mirielle West's days are crowded with shopping, luncheons, and prepping for the myriad glittering parties she attends with her actor husband, Charlie. She's been too busy to even notice the small patch of pale skin on the back of her hand. Other than an occasional overindulgence in gin and champagne, which helps to numb the pain of recent tragedy, Mirielle is the picture of health. But her doctor insists on more tests, and Mirielle reluctantly agrees. The diagnosis - leprosy - is devastating and unthinkable.

Intriguing
Revisado: 04-25-25
Enlightening portrait of a leper colony in the 20s from the perspective of a Hollywood socialite afflicted with the disease. Great cast of characters, heartfelt depiction of their relationships with each other and the outside world. Narrator was a bit robotic and shrill in her interpretation of the main character, but did a great job Giving voice to the other characters in the story. Overall, very satisfying read!

Engaging from the start, an insightful look at a lasting friendship against the backdrop of turbulence in Iran. Always love this narrator who seems able to bring the character to life in full force. Learned a lot about the politics of the time through the eyes of these brave and very different women.

Historia
Cassie Forrest isn't surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

Apocalypse with soul
Revisado: 04-10-25
Brought this title because I love Julia Whalen as a narrator – this is a very different kind of story for her: a unique twist on zombies a la the last of us series with great character development and parallel storylines that all come together– somewhat predictably – at the end. Overall, very engaging and not too gory.

Past meets present
Revisado: 03-26-25
A twisty tail that unfolds between jumps to past and present, demonstrating you can't get away with anything despite years passing. A bit confusing at first, but managed to catch up and discern who was who in each decade, suspected what might have occurred, but was still surprised by the ending. Great narration and solid character development.

Fun with an unexpected depth
Revisado: 03-14-25
Characters delivered, deadpan lines that were extremely funny at times; a great modern version of life, imitating art with references to popular television series. Despite the silliness, there was actual surprising, emotion, and depth to the characters - enjoyable read for sure!

Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.

Beautifully written
Revisado: 01-17-25
coming of age story wrapped around a series of tragic events that eventually weave together all the main characters seamlessly. Minnesota setting, overshadowed by racism against native Americans in the early 60s, paints a vivid portrait of what it was like in that small town. Loved almost as much as The Tender Land.
