Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Over-Dramatized
Revisado: 05-02-23
Very disappointing. The author dramatizes conversations that he could have no evidence for. And the narrator makes it worse in his dramatic reading of something that in itself is dramatic enough. I stopped listening.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Wonderful book
Revisado: 08-19-21
This is one of the best books I’ve read/listened to in a long while. Memorable characters. A song to human frailty, kindness, and forgiving. And a terrific portrayal of ethnoracial groups in a poor area of Red Hook in conflict and love.

A tour de force but why bother
Revisado: 11-02-20
I didn’t care for a single character, a bunch of mean spirited rouges. It is well written, but I’d much rather Re-read the Odyssey, which has relevance within its cultural setting.

Falling Upwards tells the story of the enigmatic group of men and women who first risked their lives to take to the air and so discovered a new dimension of human experience. Why they did it, what their contemporaries thought of them, and how their flights revealed the secrets of our planet in wholly unexpected ways is its subject.

A Significant Factual-Interpretative Error
Revisado: 04-01-20
I stopped listening at the discussion of the Nazca Lines in Peru. As an anthropologist who has worked in the Andes for more than half a century, I couldn't believe the author's uncritical acceptance of popular fantasies claiming that the Nazca Lines may have been built by interstellar travelers or that balloons may have been used in order to see the lines. There is no evidence for these assertions, and they demonstrate Little knowledge or understanding of either pre-Columbian or contemporary Peru. Among other matters, Peruvians still draw lines on the earth/sand. It is no big deal. If I can't trust the author on a matter that I am familiar with, I can't trust him in general.

A Faux experience to create a hook for a book
Revisado: 02-06-19
I disliked the book intensely and only kept reading because it was assigned by s book club
The book lacks insight into cultural origin narratives, pays scant attention to issues of Biblical translations (hey, neither the Hebrew or Christian Biles were written in English). But he got a book out of it. Worthless

What a Disappointment
Revisado: 11-27-18
I loved Tana French’s earlier novels, so kept listening to The Witch Elm, even as I wanted to stop. The novel is too contrived, asking too many suspensions of disbelief. Most of the characters are unpleasant and hard to like. Toby, the protagonist, is odious from the very beginning. I’m sorry to write this for I had leapt to listen to this new novel of French.

A disappointment.
Revisado: 03-21-18
I have loved Tana French’s books, but a secret place was a disappointment. The plot was too complicated for an audio version. Too many characters. I also though that the sex talk between 16 year old girls and boys didn’t ring true. I’m sure girls talk that way among themselves, but to boys??! I also did not like the alternating chapters of girls, then the detectives, finding it confusing and hard to keep straight. The female narrator was also poor, speaking in a monotone .

A Sentimental Mastrpiece
Revisado: 11-04-17
In spite of Its Long digressions, and sometimes because of them, and the need for considerable suspension of disbelief, Le Miserable’s exposition on evil, goodness, Love, and redemption, which reeks with sentimentality, remains a masterpiece. The narration is truly wonderful, brining to life the multiplicity of people in this very long book. I loved it.

Historia
James Baldwin’s stunning first novel is now an American classic. With startling realism that brings Harlem and the black experience vividly to life, this is a work that touches the heart with emotion while it stimulates the mind with its narrative style, symbolism, and excoriating vision of racism in America. Moving through time from the rural South to the northern ghetto, Baldwin chronicles a 14-year-old boy’s discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935.

Great writing, but
Revisado: 03-30-17
I loved the dialogue and setting and the story. But I found the theology and saved sections too long and tedious, which is the reSon for my low rAting of the story. That said, Baldwin is an evocative writer.
