Horrible, unjust ending that made me irate!

I hated how the arrogant old upper class besom got her way and the sweet heroine just gave up and left town with her tail between her legs. Totally unsatisfying. I read to escape, not get hit in the face with the wet towel of reality.

All sorts of unexpected characters involved in all kinds intrigue. Aristocrats, and Gypsies, and lions! Oh my! Mixed into the British society and mores and politics of the time. It would make a fantastic movie. It never lags. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

There are great characters of three or four generations, some quirky and hilarious, some damaged by events of long ago in this book. It also has a well written sense of place in a “lost” location in the south. A smidge of magical thinking makes this a thoroughly delightful read.

I am so grateful that Delia Ephron was willing to share all the love, grief, new love (at 71!), agony and overcoming of blood cancer, and finally joy at being well and relishing life, in her own honest, dry way. It is a testament to hope (and luck), and I was with her every step of the way. Sharing her friendships and family was such a wonderful present. And I am especially grateful, as a 73 year old woman, to know that love might be found again someday.
