Historic fiction at its finest

Liked the respect and meaningful exchanges between “white” and “black,” former confederates and federalists, and “easterners and westerners.” Wonderful storyline taking place in the Colorado territory.

Historia
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

A masterpiece of writing and storytelling

Charles Martin kept me riveted the entire book. The medical/surgical content was well done and written in a way that a medical person as well as a lay person could enjoy. The language was beautiful, and the story...stories...swept me into them.

Maya never stops! Though having read the hard copy quite some time ago, the Audible version quickly seized my focus. It was excellent in medical information, fast moving and credible in its several “back stories,” and the characters well developed. I loved it!

Historia
Twenty years past, in 1757, a young Redcoat, Reginald Aubrey stole a newborn boy - the lighter-skinned of Oneida twins - during the devastating fall of Fort William Henry and raised him as his own. No one connected to Reginald escaped unscathed from this crime. Not his adopted daughter, Anna. Not Stone Thrower, the Native American father determined to get his son back. Not Two Hawks, William's twin brother separated since birth, living in the shadow of his absence and hoping to build a future with Anna.

Real history masterfully unfolded
Revisado: 09-23-20
Complex Indian involvement in the Revolutionary War with their sacrifice, betrayal, and much more were unknown to me. Stories of relationships were woven with depth and beauty in the midst of terrible death, suffering and frequent bright spots of joy. I also loved the descriptions of The Great Creator and His ways. Beautiful story that I was sorry to have end.

World War I novel of hardship, courage and beauty
Revisado: 06-05-18
Narrator Liz Pearce does a spectacular job changing accents for Roseanna White's characters. English, French, Flemish, and German come across seamlessly in this wonderful book set in Europe at the beginning of World War I
Love between "family" members thrives among the 12 street orphans as the older take care of the younger.
The violin prodigy in the "family", Willa, brings her pickpocketing skills, the beauty of music, and eventually love for another musician to enrich the story.
Having read and enjoyed about another of the "family" in A Name Unknown, I will be watching for Audible to produce another.

Treasured Grace, apt play on words
Revisado: 09-16-17
What did you like about this audiobook?
The naturalness of the portrayal of life intertwined with faith was refreshing.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
The painting of a historical picture of life on the frontier: hardship, fulfillment, death, love, hope, was both believable and fascinating. In the context of normal, but courageous people, the author showed the struggle of some of the pioneers of this great country. With faith and hope individuals ventured into a better future.
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
The descriptions of conflict between the pioneers and the native people portrayed believable injustices and misunderstandings that contributed to blood shed and sorrow. Hardships of pioneer life were well portrayed, as were rewards and fulfillments.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
The narrator appeared inexperienced to give adequate expression to the power of the story.

Civil War era historic novel
Revisado: 03-21-17
Rich development of characters who come from very different stations in life. Solid, moving descriptions of love, both in explanation and in action.
I loved, too, the unfolding of some of the battles of history, leadership of various generals and officers, and stories of individual lives of both "rebels" and unions.

A Greater Love
Revisado: 03-10-17
Remarkable narration, conveying pictures of a poor, black slave man, a teenage white girl, black teens and a child, with gifting and skill so capable as to make the listener unaware that one narrator is speaking all the parts. An unbelievable, yet believable, tale from the end of the civil war era. I was taken in and scarcely able to put it down.
