Superb Introduction
Revisado: 01-27-23
In her final Chapter, Armstong contradicts her thesis favoring "early modern" to "renaissance' by admitting there was an explosion of artistic and academic talent in Italy at that time; too, her military history, especially with regard to the Hundred Years War is a little weak. But such criticisms are trivial against the wonderful depth and color Armstrong brings to the once "Dark Ages". Informative, engaging, enlightening and entertaining. One of the best "listens" I've ever enjoyed.

Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

One of our most renowned and brilliant historians takes a fresh look at the revolutionary intellectual movement that laid the foundation for the modern world. Liberty and equality. Human rights. Freedom of thought and expression. Belief in reason and progress. The value of scientific inquiry. These are just some of the ideas that were conceived and developed during the Enlightenment, and which changed forever the intellectual landscape of the Western world.

the most interesting part of this book comes from wondering how the author could make one of the most dynamic periods in intellectual history so tedious and seemingly irrelevant.

Historia
A history of the Renaissance told through the lives of its most influential patrons. From the late Middle Ages, the independent Italian city states were taken over by powerful families who installed themselves as dynastic rulers. Inspired by the humanists, the princes of 15th- and 16th-century Italy immersed themselves in the culture of antiquity, commissioning palaces, villas and churches inspired by the architecture of ancient Rome, and offering patronage to artists and writers.

well written and well read. while negotiating the tumultuous crowd of family names and places was challenging, the same made the book an engaging introduction to the period.

Historia
First published in 1884, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is among the first novels in American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English. Some have called it the first Great American Novel, and the book has become required reading in many schools throughout the United States. The story is set along the Mississippi River in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Arkansas around 1840. It depicts the development of Huckleberry (Huck) Finn, a boy about thirteen years old.

A Wonderful Classic
Revisado: 06-18-22
Howard's reading brings life to Twain's classic. Originally banned for being written in the vernacular, "Huck Finn" is again under criticism for ... being written in the vernacular. yet it is a must read about a boy's, an American author's, and America's awakening.

disappointed
Revisado: 03-16-22
Frazer's breathless reading may have been intended to add excitement to a leaden work, but it was instead distracting unpleasant. he needs a course in basic punctuation before attempting another book.
Morris's work was both interesting and informative. It was a bit lacking in any coherent thesis, and often the detail added was of questionable relevance. One got the impression that the author was putting down everything he new on the subject just to fill pages.
Overall it was a bit of a slog, but worth the effort

Historia
The Life and Death of King John was probably written in the 1590s but not published until the First Folio in 1623. Of Shakespeare's 11 history plays, King John is the one which deals with the story of a monarch most removed from Shakespeare's time. The historical remoteness of this ruler, and also the fact that he had no genealogical links with the Tudor dynasty, enabled Shakespeare to present him in a warts and allà fashion.

Oh dear god make it stop
Revisado: 12-15-20
If the Bard heard this "performance" he could only hang his head in shame. How atrocious that the best reader was that of the stage direction, which, while well read, were in and of themselves a gross distraction. the phoney accents made the production seem like an episode in the 1960 Batman series: sure, Elenore of Aquitaine was French, but EVERYONE in the Plantagenet court spoke French until Richard II. Was it really necessary to make the greatest female of the middle ages sound like Inspector Clouseau?
No lover of Shakespeare could bear this literary abortion. Avoid my mistake. Spend the time, find a Folger's audiobook, or take a pass. Like a disease, none is better than more.
