A TERRIBLE HISTORY

Listening to this book should be mandatory for every history high school student. No one should graduate who hasn't heard and discussed this terrible story. We cannot forget or white wash our collective past.
While I enjoyed hearing this book, it's almost too terrible to believe and too hard on your stomach to tolerate. At times, I had to stop listening. I could not hear any more. This story is nearly as bad as the horrors of World War II death camps and the slave laborers the Nazi made to build the arms used to fight our fathers and grandfathers. This makes you understand the mindset of the Nazis who could not understand how we could not accept the way they dealt with their "Jewish" problem when we had our own "Colored" problem.
We must acknowledge our past, including those of us descended from penniless immigrants from southern and eastern Europe who labored in the mills, mines and sweat shops of the north and fought 2 World Wars to protect liberty and justice for all.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Every post Bar Mitzvah age young Jewish adult should listen to this
When I was a child going to Hebrew school 50+ years ago, we went over all of this in a hurry I never really understood how Judaism developed from a Temple with sacrifices, to a modern worldwide book based religion. I never understood how the Jews came to leave Israel and went out into the world and carried down their belief in one G-d. This really helped me to understand my background. I feel more a part of the Jewish community now that I've heard this. I am an assimilated American Jew. I only know my great grandparents arrived in the USA as part of the great Jewish migration in the 1880 s to escape the Progrums. I cannot trace my history back beyond that. I do not know exactly where my great grandparents came from other than somewhere in Eastern Europe. I do not have any idea how their ancestors got to Eastern Europe other than to presume they came from the Iberian Peninsula after the Inquisition or understood how the Jews left Israel and came to settle in all of the Mediterranean countries. I never knew how a belief in one all knowing G-d was carried down for 2500 years. I wish I had heard this when I was in college.

What did you like best about this story?

It greatly enhanced my understanding of my Jewish background and gave me some insist into how Christianity developed.

Would you try another book from Scott Sigler and/or Phil Gigante?

I enjoy listening to mysteries while working at home. This one was a little too strange and definitely too long. It would have been much better is it was 6 hours shorter. Be warned. Only a so so mystery.

What made the experience of listening to The Arsenal of Democracy the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the book but the title was very misleading. The book should be renamed Ford Motor Company in WWII. There was very little about any other Company switching from civilian production to war production or the changes this brought. This is the story of Edsel and Henry Ford II developing the Willow Run plant to build B-24 bombers and eventually achieving their goal of producing a bomber a day. This is not the story of how American industry converted to build the tanks, planes and bombs that won the war. Nor is the story about the great migration of people from rural areas to large urban areas to work in the war factories and the changes this brought.

If you could sum up No Ordinary Time in three words, what would they be?

This is a must read if you are interested in American history. I am 65 and I have read hundreds of books on WWII. None told the story as well as this book. It is hard to imagine the US in 1939 and to compare the world my parents grew up in and the world I grew up in the 1950's. It has the best analysis of our entry into the war and a better explanation of why the US took some actions or did not take others than any I have every read. Most history book concentrate on what happened. This explains why it happened and the great changes that occurred in the US in the 1940's. If you want to understand things in 2014 you should read or listen to this book.
