Historia
As the Archduke Franz Ferdinand arrives in Sarajevo one June day in 1914, Rafael Pinto is busy crushing herbs and grinding tablets behind the counter at the pharmacy he inherited from his father. It’s not quite the life he had expected during his poetry-filled student days in libertine Vienna, but it’s nothing a dash of laudanum, a summer stroll and idle fantasies can’t put in perspective. And then the world explodes.

Beautiful, sad, hard
Revisado: 12-13-24
The rhythm of the writing is something quite special. It feels like a song. I love the mix of languages and even though I could not understand all of it you do get the meaning. This is the first time I really felt the suffering of people who lived through both world wars and the devastating impact it had on the lives of individuals. This one I just could not let go from the beginning till the end. The narration is just beautiful. Will definitely listen to is again.

Historia
Born under different stars, Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in a hyper-masculine world. They are caught between two of Glasgow’s housing estates where young working-class men divide themselves along sectarian lines, and fight territorial battles for the sake of reputation. They should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all, and yet they become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the doocot that James has built for his prize racing pigeons. As they begin to fall in love, they dream of escaping the grey city.

Historia
May 2021. London. Campbell Flynn - art historian and celebrity intellectual - is entering the empire of middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration and the finer things, controversy and novelty, he doesn't take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Which will prove the first of his huge mistakes. The second? Milo Manghasa, his beguiling and provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, has experiences and ideas which excite his teacher. He also has a plan. Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes and secrets and scandals will be revealed.

Brilliantly read
Revisado: 07-18-24
Thought provoking about the world we find ourselves in. The old and the new. Sad that the anarchist wins the day with old world sentiment right there. Selfrighteous and the old manifested in the new. But that is the human condition.

A story of life
Revisado: 12-12-23
A part of history I know very little about, so now I am going to explore more.
I love how the story illustrates that we all see beauty through our own eyes and that a lot of right and wrong is relative to circumstances

How much can one suffer?
Revisado: 09-28-23
It is more than likely the reality of the time, but it is quite an exhausting experience to go through the tiles and tribulations that each character suffered thought the book. Reading the book was easier than listening to it.
