I read this soon after reading Booker T. Washington’s Up From Slavery, and the contrast is intense, largely because of their different experiences of slavery, in time, age, and humour of their masters. Both are good books, they are written by different authors with different stories to tell. In the days I was reading this book I found myself on the verge of tears, in my own thoughts reflecting about the practice of slavery.

The book is long… that goes without saying. There were portion especially around the middle where I just felt like I was getting more detail into political decisions than I was interested in knowing, but I suppose I should have expected that given these are memoirs of Obama’s time as president. What I did hope to get more of was a reflective look on his personal life during his presidency. I wanted to hear more about those basketball games with Sasha, and the banter between him and Michelle, but maybe thats content for another book?
I appreciate Obama’s reflections on war. What stuck with me was the point in the book where he speaks to how the war decisions he makes or doesn’t make always put someone’s son or daughter in the line of fire, be it the army cadets who go into battle or the children in the various nations whose sovereignty the cadets are trying to secure, without which the lives of those children are already on the firing line.
That said, after almost a year, I’m glad to be done with the book.

i really enjoyed listening to this book. i’m a very outgoing person but i do not enjoy the company of people i have not met before. i love the company of familiar people. i would not say i have social anxiety, but i relate so much with mindy’s stories, and the conclusions of preferring to be lonely than to be bored, and preferring to be lonely than to be with surface level fake friends with whom no true intimacy or vulnerability is shared (that stuff exhausts me). i really appreciated this story (and enjoyed it much more than the first one in the series).

Definitely felt more like a personal reflection than a memoir - a sweet story of a mother thinking about her daughter’s religion.
