Sweet story, if a little slow
Revisado: 11-07-24
The characters drew me in at first but it was a bit saccharine for my taste. Not much happens action wise so it is a lot of repetition.

Candid but Fair representation of the Trump experience
Revisado: 08-13-24
The author seems to be trying to tell the honest truth while not coming across as bashing his family. I appreciate the story and its insights and the writing is fine. I just don’t know why they let the author read this book for audio. His cadence is sing song and stilted at best. It detracts from the story, which is important to be told.

Too much exposition
Revisado: 08-13-24
I wanted to like this book, but the story unfolds ploddingly and with too much repetition of internal thoughts or explanations of why the characters are how they are. Rather than showing the reader who the characters are through scenes, we are constantly in their heads while the story goes nowhere. Could not finish even on sped up narration.

Historia
In the summer of 1985, a brilliant young British DNA scientist Helena Greenwood is found murdered in her front garden in a quiet suburb in California. The police believe they know the killer’s identity but there’s no evidence against him, and the only thing linking him to the crime is the fact he’d been charged with sexually assaulting Helena just a few months previously.

Complicated and troubling story
Revisado: 01-22-24
Even though I disagree with the author’s final assessment of the situation, I understand the complexities and the issues within the system that make it a very difficult call. Listening to the audiotapes of the accused, I feel certain that the author was correct on the first book she wrote. But I really appreciate her willingness to self-reflect and consider the flawed system that makes this very thing an issue.

The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Grossly overacted narration
Revisado: 12-22-23
I might have liked the story had it not been so over-dramatically read. People just don’t speak this way. The language in the story does the work. It doesn’t need to be so over wrought the entire way through. Less is more.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Murder, mystery, and history
Revisado: 09-20-23
While rather lengthy, this narrated, audible version of the book, held my attention throughout a long drive. Focused on one particular, gruesome, murder, the author explores the history of the Mormon church, and which factions might foster the evil that lived in one Mormon family. There were so many enlightening elements to this work and I’m glad I chose it.

Slow start, but gets better
Revisado: 07-17-23
So plodding in the beginning that I sped up AND skipped forward in places. Once you get past that and start to hear from the second character the pace and tension pick up and it gets more interesting. If I hadn’t finished it (and I almost quit from boredom) I’d have thoroughly disliked this book. But I became invested in the story and the characters midway through. Good story.
