Historia
One fateful evening, journalist Eric Siblin attended a recital of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites and began an epic quest that would unravel three centuries of intrigue, politics, and passion. Winner of the Mavis Gallant Prize for Nonfiction and the McAuslan First Book Prize, The Cello Suites weaves together three dramatic narratives: the disappearance of Bach's manuscript in the 18th century; Pablo Casals's discovery and popularization of the music in Spain in the late-19th century; and Siblin's infatuation with the suites in the present day.

Bach Stories with Brilliance
Revisado: 03-13-24
I have been a Bach fan starting in High School when I discovered his Inventions in our piano bench. Such amazing beauty. The more Bach music I encountered, the more amazed I was. In college, it was Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Beatles. I even co-constructed a synthesizer and then my wife and I programmed in some Bach to be played automagically, at which time I discovered that the Brilliance of Back seems to shine through most any crazy interpretation.
So, I could not put this book down. Getting to know Bach better was such a joy. The author's own Bach journey was quite entertaining. Tears filled my eyes at the end of the book.
The only thing that I did ot rate as 5 was the reader, as he reminded me of some truly annoying narrations on YouTube. Still, after a while, I got used to his voice, and all was well, especially nice as I can barely see after a bad cataract operation. (Thanks Audible for being extant.)

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

A Brilliant Telling of a Horrible Story
Revisado: 02-24-24
Rachel has done it again: A scholarly work that is easy to listen to about a subject that makes one uncomfortable, but telling a story that must be told. Hopefully, this book will help leaders in the future to do the right thing, and to not repeat the horrible mistakes that were made in the past.
Thank-you Rachel!

Deeply Informative
Revisado: 02-23-24
A few years ago I was in the Emergency Room, where I received Fentanyl for pain while surgeons worked on my injured face. Given all of the news stories, I was graveky concerned and surprised, although my story had a good ending, as I experienced very little pain. As a result of this experience, I became interested in the drug.
This book is not a story about why the drug is addictive or how it is legally used, but rather how people managed to make this drug available illegally in the US. The Story is comprehensive, deep and broad, focusing on activities in many countries, especially China and Mexico.
The book is well structured, interesting and well read. I was quite addicted to it ... oops, bad word choice!
This book will be valuable to people who desire to understand the drug crisis as well as people who work in the field of creating drug policies.

Good Story, but a Painful Listen
Revisado: 02-23-24
I enjoyed the story, but the slow pace was a pain. Even more painful were many mispronounced words, as was the sound of one of the voices through my phone speakers. The Story, however, was nearly worth the pain.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

Well written and very timely.
Revisado: 11-22-21
This book goes a long way towards explaining the Oxycontin mess that we are in. Sadly, the over reaction to the issues associated with this drug have made my life so pain filled - at least I now understand the. origin of the disaster. Another book would be helpful to explain the aftermath, which is still on going. I hope that it happens - my doctors have such a childlike fear of opioids and the fed - sort of like those horrible days when hospitals were reluctant to prescribe pain killers.

Historia
When leading Princeton physicist Paul Steinhardt began working in the 1980s, scientists thought they knew all the conceivable forms of matter. The Second Kind of Impossible is the story of Steinhardt’s 35-year-long quest to challenge conventional wisdom. It begins with a curious geometric pattern that inspires two theoretical physicists to propose a radically new type of matter - one that raises the possibility of new materials with never-before-seen properties but that violates laws set in stone for centuries.

Interesting Story, but too Slow and too Long
Revisado: 12-01-19
Enjoyed lots. Nice presentation of topics that I have been interested in for decades. Nice presentation of what it means to be a star professor. Nice memories of Feinman.
The voice of the narrator, although nice, is more appropriate for a macho explorer than that of a scientist. Hard to ignore. Also several yucky mispronounciations that drove me crazy. You MUST stop this type of error, as it is a severe distraction. Get a coach or a proof listener or prepare for the hate mail.
Nearly impossible to find the right image! At a minimum, at least put the number of the chapter next to the image. Even better, put the image number in the text.
BOTTOM LINE: If you like Science magazines and are patient, you will enjoy this book, which today costs less that a good magazine.

In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Brilliant Story Telling
Revisado: 11-03-19
This is a very important story. Only Rachel can so beautifully tell it.
Please get a sequel out ASAP. THANKS!
For folks new to Rachel, she does not shout out things that you are supposed to believe in a shrill voice. z
Instead, she puts together a historically complete, deep, comprehensive and accurate story. And, after she is done, you then have a great understanding.
Before you read this book, you have likely seen all of the headlines. Now, you understand the stories behind the headlines, and how they all so neatly tie together.
Thanks, Rachel: You made my 3 hour drive feel like 10 minutes.

More than anyone before him - more than Beethoven, Byron, even the preternatural Paganini - it was Franz Liszt who created one of the most enduring archetypes of the Romantic era: that of the artist "who walks with God and brings down fire from heaven in order to kindle the hearts of humankind." For every lover of music, Liszt remains someone you must understand, and this eight-lecture series is an ideal place to begin your acquaintance with both the man and his music.
