Fascinating story performed brilliantly
Revisado: 01-11-25
I have listened to hundreds of audio books, and John Lee is without question the best narrator I have ever heard. His accents and inflections are flawless, and he keeps the listener engaged for the entire 45 hours of this compelling example of classic literature.

Historia
From the cohost of Fox & Friends, the true story of the anonymous spies who helped win the Revolutionary War. Among the pantheon of heroes of the American Revolution, six names are missing. First and foremost, Robert Townsend, an unassuming and respected businessman from Long Island, who spearheaded the spy ring that covertly brought down the British

Fascinating story, poorly read
Revisado: 11-16-24
This book covers a truly fascinating but little-known story within the American Revolution, and I strongly encourage everyone to read it - and to watch the series "Turn: Washington's Spies". I do not, however, recommend this version of the audio book. The narrator reads like he is in a tremendous hurry. I slowed it down to 90% of the original speed, which was still a little too fast but any slower made him sound drunk, which was an even bigger distraction. Speed-reading aside, his cadence was awkward, routinely taking slight pauses when he shouldn't and not pausing when he should. Same goes for his inflection and vocal emphasis (people who have listened to hundreds of books will understand what I mean). And this is all the more surprising and frustrating when you consider that he is reading words he had written himself.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Great story, told very well
Revisado: 10-29-24
I think this recording is very nearly a 'perfect storm' of (1) a remarkable life worthy of being shared, (2) a skilled author/historian, and (3) narration that complements the story rather than distracting from it.

Historia
For years d’Artagnan shared his adventures with his three comrades - Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - but now, in Between Two Kings, the First Musketeer returns to the forefront. This is truly d’Artagnan’s novel, bringing to a dramatic climax the story that began when he first arrived in Paris 30 years earlier in The Three Musketeers.

Where’s the rest?
Revisado: 05-10-24
I have been listening through the Musketeers Cycle for a couple months now, and I’ve been loving every minute of it. Dumas is a masterful writer, Lawrence Ellsworth is a brilliant translator, and John Lee is the perfect narrator. My only complaint/question is this: where is the rest? Why does the audiobook end by saying “This story continues in “A Court of Daggers”, when that title cannot be found anywhere? This recording was released 3 years ago; why hasn’t the next volume been released? I understand breaking the story into smaller pieces, but not if you’re going to leave your readers hanging.
Please, please, PLEASE finish this series. It’s a masterpiece, and it deserves to be told in its entirety.

Scripture reveals that the great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. In this paradigm-shattering work, John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn't truly exist. Delight is our duty. Join him as he unveils stunning, life-impacting truths you saw in the Bible but never dared to believe.

Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career. He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realizes that Winslow's so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent.

Historia
An activist attorney is killed in a cute little L.A. trolley called Angels Flight, far from Harry Bosch's Hollywood turf. But the case is so explosive - and the dead man's enemies inside the L.A.P.D. are so numerous - that it falls to Harry to solve it. Now the streets are superheating. Harry's year-old Vegas marriage is unraveling. And the hunt for a killer is leading Harry to another high-profile L.A. murder case, one where every cop had a motive. The question is, did any have the guts?

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.
