Historia
It begins with an ambushed commando raid that leaves all but one of the expatriate resistance fighters dead or captured. Though wounded, Jan Baalsrud, the sole survivor, takes off on a courageous, incredible trek into the wilds of the Lyngen Alps, while the Nazis pursue him relentlessly. He suffers frostbite, snowblindness, and a terrible fall in an avalanche. At last, delirious and near death, he chances on to a cabin, where the first in a series of remarkably brave and clever men and women come to his aid.

Compelling story sensitively told
Revisado: 07-05-24
This is an amazing story of one man's will to live being ultimately rewarded. The author's family- friendly presentation manages to convey the awful realities of war and the thrill of escape without profanity or lurid detail. Highly recommended!

Enriches understanding of religious intolerance
Revisado: 10-17-23
Written by a reporter who has a Catholic perspective, the writer explores the decline of religious tolerance and freedom in the Middle East by her interviews of the everyday people who live there. In many ways, it's a sad tale - not the tear-jerking kind but a sadness of a getting an increased understanding of desperate human suffering without any earthly prospect of relief. She spares the goriest details - a good thing - but there's still plenty to help illustrate the plight of various ancient peoples who can no longer take for granted their freedom of worship. One eye-opening point was why Christians in these places actually support dictators. My biggest personal disappointment with the book was the amount of space the author gives about her own life - I almost thought I had somehow gotten an incorrect book until I got past the initial pages. But aside from this, there's a lot of human interest and readers will gain appreciation of their own freedoms that they may otherwise take for granted.

Historia
New research indicates that crows are among the brightest animals in the world. And professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington John Marzluff has done some of the most extraordinary research on crows, which has been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic, and the Chicago Tribune, as well as on NPR and PBS. Now he teams up with artist and fellow naturalist Tony Angell to offer an in-depth look at these incredible creatures - in a book that is brimming with surprises.

Fairly technical
Revisado: 10-09-23
On the plus side, there were quite a few very interesting stories about corvids - which is what I was after. They are remarkable creatures! While the narrator did a great job, as a layperson I found that the heavy emphasis on the science of how brains work made the work difficult to follow. And the time devoted to the theory of evolution (which was presented as fact) was disappointing from my perspective. If I were a scientist as well as a nature lover, I would have probably given this book a 5.
