This books delivers. From Failure to Success is not just a retread of “we learn more from our failures than from our successes.” My pet peeve is self-improvement/motivational books that are merely descriptive rather than prescriptive. From Failure to Success avoids that pitfall and provides prescriptions in spades, including actionable items and exercises in every section. Providing them is clearly the raison d’etre for the book. Full disclosure - I received the audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review, and I chose to go ahead and buy the Kindle edition as well. It’s a book I will keep nearby to refer to and to annotate. It starts from the position of assuming you’ve either “failed” at something or are afraid you will. Meadows provides a way of not only reframing of the concept of failure, but of success as well, prefering to focus on successful process, not the end result. Meadows describes the seven types of failures and how to handle them; provides habits of mind and real-life exercises to make you more resilient in the face of failure or fear of it; describes strategies to keep you pounding away at the process, however boring or difficult it may be; and gives you a 5-step process for coping with failure - and bouncing back. What I found truly interesting was his description of the reasons to give up, a concept usually antitehtical to authors and readers of motivational literature. Personally, I have found the never-give-up philosphy untenable, but have had difficulty articulating the difference between resignation and the deliberate decision to walk away from (or postpone) the goal for rational (not rationalized) reasons. Meadows provides some litmus tests that don’t necessarily let you let yourself off the hook, but guide you to clearly detemine whether to persist or move on. In each chapter, the author describes the concept, provides a real-life example from Meadows’s own or someone else’s life, then provides exercises for recovery from failure and for habits of resilience. The concepts and exercises apply to more than just business; they work for goals in school, family, social life, and any other area of life where you want to make improvement but have been struggling with failure. My only nit to pick with the audiobook is that I am not particularly fond of the reader and listened to it on 1.5x speed. While From Failure to Success is clearly a motivational and inspiring book, it has its feet firmly on the ground and should be in the how-to section of the bookstore.
