Historia
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

Great intergenerational tale
Revisado: 12-21-24
Superb narration. Interesting story arc. I preferred the quieter, historical passages in the book. At the midway point I was enthralled, really enjoying it and holding myself back from recommending it. Towards the end, for me - one too many dramas, an excess of violence, a couple of cartoonish characters, and some too-good-to-be-true moments. Recommended with a few reservations.

This audio has been highly effective at sending me to sleep at night. It was a life saver over some stressful years. The background music is appropriately low key and the narration mellow and soothing. Previously I had the cassette tape. I wore that out! I’m happy to have found a recording once more - and to be able to wholeheartedly recommend it to others.

Historia
In poyums, Len Pennie has created a collection that is as approachable as it is affecting; whether she's writing letters to her younger self, advocating for women's rights or adapting fairy tales to process an abusive relationship, Len's voice is bold, unashamedly frank and unmistakeably hers. She consciously fuses Scots into her poetry, cleverly ensuring that it is accessible to speakers of both languages.

When Kate wins an item at her children’s elementary school auction - an all-inclusive trip to SeaView at Sandpiper Bay - she thinks it’s just what her family needs after a decade of career disappointments and a marriage on its last legs. She has no reason to believe that said trip is a Fyre Festival-level fraud and, in fact, the catalyst to her unraveling. But it is. Oh, but it is.

Better to read than listen to
Revisado: 10-21-24
The first, printed, edition of this book was excellent - well written, stimulating, enjoyable. I recommended it to med students. Health tech and care options have changed immensely over the past 20 years so I was looking forward to listening to this updated edition. I’ll read the book instead. I found the audio delivery very off-putting. Others may find it OK. Personally I’ve struggled to find engaging or even tolerable audio in the Very Short Introduction series. The podcast series is better listening.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Superb writing, narration… on high rotate!
Revisado: 08-22-24
This is a wonderful beginning of a very satisfying series. Murderbot is a delightful character, and the creation of a talented, innovative and generous writer/storyteller. On top of that, this audio book narration is superb. I’ve listened at least five times over the past year - it’s comfort listening!

But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Loved Rachel’s Holiday. Love this update. Smart, contemporary, real. The Irish-accented audio (it’s read by Marion Keyes herself!) is superb. I’ve listened twice so far and will again and again.
