Historia
Against the backdrop of political and legal corruption in Second Empire France, La Bête Humaine (1890) contrasts the technological advancements of the Machine Age with the primitive and timeless human impulse to possess through killing and to kill through possession. The lives of two railwaymen on the Paris-to-Le-Havre line are fatally entwined by their love for the same woman in this shocking account of brutal violence, greed, revenge, and repression.

great writing, powerful story
Revisado: 01-10-24
I forced myself to read this for book club. It's top notch writing and the reader is A+++++. Fabulous. The problem is that I didn't like that everyone on the planet has murder on the mind. I didn't particularly want to be in the mind of a murderer. There's not a single person who is actually ethical. I know unethical people exist, but so do ethical people. Zola was maybe a troubled soul. Great ending which I found satisfying and powerful, given the premise of the story.

Historia
Remembering Satan is a lucid, measured, yet absolutely riveting inquest into a case that destroyed a family, engulfed a small town, and captivated an America obsessed by rumors of a satanic underground. It follows the increasingly bizarre accusations and confessions, as well as the claims and counterclaims of police, FBI investigators, and mental-health professionals.

This book is weird and important. The reader mispronounces a few words, which rankles this pedant, but overall does a good job. The story is staggering and one cries out "Why?" and "How?"

Historia
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

I do see that the author has great facility with the English language. It would be better if he used it to tell an interesting story. I read this book for a book club, or I never would have slogged my way through.
Torture!!!!! It's a bunch of stupid images of ooohh so spooky ghosts. Who cares?

Historia
As Proverbs fits squarely into the genre of “advice to a son” literature, so the Song of Songs fits squarely into the genre of erotic love poetry. Traditionally read as an allegory of God’s love for Israel or of Christ’s love for the Church, Logos Bible Study’s Dr. Bill Creasy explores the Song of Songs as what it is, first and foremost: an erotic love poem written by Solomon in the final years of his life, a poem tinged with deep regret and longing.

Historia
If Isaiah is the “thundering prophet”, then Jeremiah is the “weeping prophet”. Jeremiah holds the terrible position of being both a priest and a prophet; he represents both the people before God, and God before the people—not unlike a lawyer representing both husband and wife in a contentious and bitter divorce! Join Logos Bible Study’s Dr. Bill Creasy as he follows Jeremiah, the “weeping prophet”, through his many trials and tribulations.

spectacular
Revisado: 06-13-21
Dr. Creasy is brilliant, warm, funny, and an incredible story teller. He elucidates the bible from an intelligent, scholarly Christian perspective. He only occasionally speaks explicitly theologically, and in a way that I think is probably welcoming to non-Christians as well although that's hard for me to judge.

Historia
What do the lives of Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and other historical figures have in common with Paula Poundstone? In the hands of this wryly observant and self-deprecating comedian, the answer is outrageously funny and unexpectedly touching. Poundstone compares her crazy life to theirs, as she holds forth on her children, her career, and the time in her life when it appeared she would lose them both.

Armed with her unique brand of self-deprecating wit and the scientific method, in each chapter Paula tries out a different get-happy hypothesis.

Revisado: 02-13-20
i really enjoyed this book. Paula is very sweet and funny and her big heart is evident throughout. I appreciated that they made use of the audio format to occasionally add small (non-intrusive) sound effects, which few audiobooks do. Most are simply slaves to the written tect. I highly recommend this book for light reading.
