Historia
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

A must read for those who want America to Build
Revisado: 04-09-25
If you're disenchanted by the extremes on the right and left, this book will give you some hope about the future of the US. It is centrist, well researched, interesting, and thoughtful. The conclusions plot a path to an optimistic future.

For any man who has ever dealt with depression
Revisado: 03-28-25
This is a must read for any man who has ever suffered from or struggled with depression. This is my fourth Terry Real book. While other more recent titles are more developed, structured, and polished, this early book is very likely his most powerful and personal book.
This is for those who are trying to find appropriate masculinity in today's world.

Historia
Our species has amassed unprecedented knowledge of nature, which we have tried to use to seize control of life and bend the planet to our will. In A Natural History of the Future, biologist Rob Dunn argues that such efforts are futile. We may see ourselves as life’s overlords, but we are instead at its mercy. In the evolution of antibiotic resistance, the power of natural selection to create biodiversity, and even the surprising life of the London Underground, Dunn finds laws of life that no human activity can annul.

If you like biology for its own sake, the book is okay. If you're looking for connections and ways to help navigate the future, it's CRAP.

Historia
When COVID-19 hit the United States, New York governor Andrew Cuomo was thrust onto the national stage, hailed around the globe for his leadership. Alongside him every step of the way, Melissa DeRosa quickly became a household name. In her riveting memoir, DeRosa details her journey as a young woman in politics rising to the highest levels of government, writing with raw honesty and vulnerability about the personal challenges she faced—a failing marriage, infertility, death threats, misogyny—while navigating unprecedented professional landmines along the way.

great memoir
Revisado: 12-23-23
I really liked this book. the narrative is told chronologically. The last part--about the sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo-- is fascinating and describes in journalistic detail all that's wrong with cancel culture and or lack of giving people due process.
DeRosa changed my mind about all that happened and provided context on the egos and motivations for those who wanted Cuomo out.

With Quiet, Susan Cain urged our society to cultivate space for the undervalued, indispensable introverts among us, thereby revealing an untapped power hidden in plain sight. Now she employs the same mix of research, storytelling, and memoir to explore why we experience sorrow and longing, and how embracing the bittersweetness at the heart of life is the true path to creativity, connection, and transcendence.

Revisado: 11-23-23
I love this book. It is well researched, well conceived, and well written. Ms. Cain's narration is as good as the book and the major themes. I will now be looking at some of her earlier books. This is one of my favorite three books of nonfiction that I have read this year.

Historia
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

I like Adam Grant's previous work. There is a section in this book where he says that he has a goal of writing a 9 for each book he does and accepts things if they are an 8.
Adam, this is a 2 on a good day. You failed on this one. It is beneath your ususal quality.

Historia
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

great performances, lackluster story
Revisado: 10-20-23
how did this book win a Pulitzer Prize? It looks asking for half the book and only gets moderately interesting in the second half. there are so many great books and great writers out there (e.g., Atwood, Awad, Powers, Moore, Patchett, etc.) , surely the committee could have found a more deserving book than this one. in its best parts, it was ho-hum.
