Gabriel Byrne reads his story in his own inimitable voice. He transports you to his childhood in Dublin and through his life. It’s short stories about his life. His honesty is admirable. Highly recommend!

It made me laugh out loud many times. Clever dialogue and character. Let’s never go back to the 50’s.

This novel is so rich in early American history and an Irish immigrant's tale. Thomas is a kind man who fights bravely and loves deeply.
Mr. Kelly's Irish accent is perfect for this audiobook. I'm looking forward to listening to more of Sebastian Barry's books!

Any additional comments?

This is non fiction and a well researched book. The subject is how people need each other to feel connected. Through wars and trauma, if we feel a part of something bigger than ourselves - a community, a country, a tribe - we can make it through anything.

Would you listen to I Am Malala again? Why?

I learned a lot about Islam, Pakistan, and the way the U.S. is perceived by Pakistani's.

What did you like best about this story?

Learning the history of Pakistan and the Swat Valley from Ms. Yousafzai, who clearly loves her homeland.

What about Archie Panjabi’s performance did you like?

Very well modulated and paced. She sounded just like I would expect Malala to sound - like a young woman!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The way Malala's father teaches her about the politics of the region and world, and why education is so important. It helped me understand why the Taliban was able to convince Pakistani's that they were the true followers of Islam. Educated Muslims knew that the Koran was subverted by the Taliban.

Any additional comments?

This is so much more than a biography - it's a wonderful history lesson too.

Didn't know about Irish slaves

An interesting story of how two sisters are taken by slave traders from Ireland. The sisters are separated and one has a terrible master and the other has the kind you read about in Cinderella.
I had never known that there were Irish people forced into slavery so it was an eye opener. The narrator took away from the story by over acting and making every sentence a drama. Gave it a romance novel flavor which the story didn't warrant.

It took me a little while to get fully engaged in this audiobook. But the characters and what happens to them are intriguing. When they have choices, how do they chooses? Would I make the same choice in their situation? Doerr helped me see how little some people - especially young people, understood about what was going on outside their own school or village. And the sacrifices that some of them made once they learned the truth. Great story, excellent narrator - I'll be looking for more from both of them.

Would you listen to Not My Father's Son: A Memoir again? Why?

I enjoyed the memoir because Cumming switches between his very successful present and the past. How he over came the abuse and rejection of his father is very admirable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Alan Cumming appears to be a very sweet, kind, intelligent and caring man. I felt very sorry for his father who lost the chance to connect with a truly thoughtful son.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it was hard to stop listening. His narration was excellent - loved his Scottish Highland accent.
