A Paean to Torture
Revisado: 12-07-10
Let me start by saying that I *used* to be a big fan of Vince Flynn, but this (unfortuantely) may be my last book of his. If you're a big fan of the 2000s, you're gonna love this book: A full-blown Ayn Rand-ian lecture on torture, preemptive war and the whole neocon world view.
The only book that was more ridiculously right-wing that I've managed to get through is Crichton's "State of Fear," which was also the only other book I've ever given one star.
What a truly awful book this is. Very little action, almost entirely political lecture (just like "State of Fear"). I'll probably try another Flynn because I used to consider him one of my favorite thriller writers ("Consent to Kill" was one of the best I've read), but if it veers down this path again I'll have to give up on him which I really don't want to do.

From his first novel, Mohawk, to his most recent, Straight Man, Richard Russo has demonstrated great affinity for the tragicomic human condition, and here he expands his geographical and psychological claims on the small town, blue-collar heart of the country.

Richard Russo is a master
Revisado: 04-02-09
This is my third Russo novel, after Nobody's Fool and Straight Man, and it's my belief that Russo is perhaps America's greatest current novelist.
This is a beautiful book, with characters that are as richly drawn and as unique as some of Dickens' most memorable.
And McLarty's narration is perfect, as always.

Here are the trademarks of Stone's greatest fiction: the American embroiled in Third World corruption, the diplomats and convert operatives, the journalists, idealists, and opportunists. Yet in Bay of Souls, the author's sights are set inward, to a place where politics is superfluous, experience unreliable. Never before has Stone probed so intensely the psychological depths of one man's mind. What he finds there defies expectations.

A Haunting Book
Revisado: 03-17-09
This is a very good book, adeptly read. It does take a fairly jarring turn about 3/4 of the way through, which may have turned off some of the reviewers.
There are several memorable scenes here that will stay with you long after you finish this, which makes it well worth the read.

Wilson Gets Sci-Fi Right
Revisado: 04-04-08
A very good book. This is what science fiction should be, IMHO. The setting is clearly strange and the apocalyptic mood is clearly there, but the story is about the characters. The last 1/4 of the book is excellent (and haunting) sci-fi, and for the most part you do care about the characters and the world they inhabit.
Great job!

Interesting idea, well done
Revisado: 10-14-07
An unsual story, told in the form of a letter to OBL describing the effect that an AQ attack on a London football match had on her and her young family.
Well told by a very likable everywoman lower middle class letter writer, narrated to perfection by Susan Lyons.
Highly recommended.

Historia
Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. The crime was never resolved, and the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.

If you appreciate both fine literature and excellent suspense, read all of the Harry Bosch novels, and particularly this one--one of his best.

Historia
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

What a great book--a psychological thriller that is not in the least bit dated. Excellent characters make this one of my favorite books. And George Guidall adds to the experience with his flawless narration (including 20-character Russian names!). Bravo!

Excellent book, nearly impossible to put down. Coben packs more twists and surprises into one book than most suspense writers do in a lifetime. And Scott Brick is at the top of his game here: A masterful reading.
If you like suspense novels even marginally, you should love this book and this performance.
