Poor writing, directing, and acting makes this a trifecta of awful.
Revisado: 05-02-25
Two stories that feel like hastily written Cliff Notes of any Sherlock Holmes story. I realize these are shorts, but that's no excuse for such inane plots and cardboard cutout characters perfectly matched by amateur-hour acting. Yecch!

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Deep, rich, captivating, and well-paced.
Revisado: 05-01-25
I am not much of a fan of fantasy, and was reluctant to listen, even though it was suggested by a friend who's opinion I trust. And at around 42 hours long, I assumed the book would not hold my interest. Boy, was I wrong!
This is a remarkably paced book. Sanderson walks right up to the line of offering too much of everything, but always pulls back before crossing that line. What you are left with is an epic tale built solidly of the day-to-day moments of real, believable, three-dimensional characters.
The world building is outstanding and I can only imagine where he'll take the in the later books of the series.
Count me in for more!

Classic creepiness.
Revisado: 06-17-24
A slow burning story populated with interesting and fully realized characters. Atmosphere so well-crafted that you can smell the camp fires and feel miss under your feet. It is rare to find a novel that so perfectly presents the inner mind of teenagers, and treats them with the respect they deserve.

Annoyingly silly at times.

Not even the talent of the lead cast can save this one. The American accents are some of the worst I have ever heard, and the Southern dialect used by many characters is horribly out of date and ridiculous. Nicholas Courtney deserved better than this.

Historia
Sean Carroll, theoretical physicist and one of this world’s most celebrated writers on science, rewrites the history of 20th-century physics. Already hailed as a masterpiece, Something Deeply Hidden shows for the first time that facing up to the essential puzzle of quantum mechanics utterly transforms how we think about space and time. His reconciling of quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of relativity changes, well, everything. Most physicists haven’t even recognized the uncomfortable truth: Physics has been in crisis since 1927.

Packed with brain busting information.
Revisado: 03-31-22
While I loved this book, and will listen again, I found it funny that Carrol laments the dogmatic approach many physicists take when rejecting the Many Worlds theory, while he himself takes continual potshots at other theories. At one point he casually mentions that consciousness arises from the brain, but that is not the direction that current research points.
I am no physicist, and I'm not particularly good at math, so take this with a grain of salt but Carrol ontinually tells us that the Many Worlds theory is the simplest theory out there. One example he gives is that it does not need all of the extra hidden input variables that many other theories require. But if the product of your equations is the creation of multiple entire universes, with all of the energy and matter they contain, how is that any less complicated?
Regardless, his research is phenomenal and this is a fascinating book. Definitely worth a follow up listen.
