Historia
Raised as an orphan by her aunt, Chariline has only been told a few pieces of her parents’ tragic love story. Her beautiful dark skin is proof that her father was Cushite, but she knows nothing else. While visiting her grandfather before his retirement as the Roman official in the queen’s court, Chariline overhears that her father is still alive, and discovering his identity becomes her obsession. Both her grandfather and the queen have reasons for keeping this secret, however, and forbid her quest. So Chariline sneaks on the ship of a merchant trusted by friends.

Inconsistent narration
Revisado: 03-02-25
Tessa Afshar is superb once again. I wish I had read this book instead of listening on Audible. This narrator took a lovely story, with some characters Afshar readers had already met, and turned them into caricatures. The voices of her characters were inconsistent. Everyone seemed to have a lilting Cushite accent, regardless of where they were from. Several female characters sounded ridiculous. It was painful to get through but I persevered because I am an Afshar fan. I’ll watch for this narrator’s name and will not listen to her again.

Weak narrator
Revisado: 02-05-25
The story was good, the narrator wasn’t so much. At times she used a sing song voice for some characters. Her enunciation was poor on some words, which was quite annoying. Dinnint for didn’t and others.

Painful narrator
Revisado: 05-17-24
Story was ok. Narrator was absolutely horrendous to listen to. Sounded like Betty White overacting. She drug out the lines and put emphasis where it didn’t belong. Might have enjoyed it more if I’d done the reading myself.Hard to say.

Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

Not fabulous
Revisado: 07-11-23
I had to make myself finish this book. Not typically a fan of author read audio books and this one was no different. I couldn’t get immersed in the story because I felt like I was being read to. The only redeeming quality was Ms. Flagg’s accent for the main character’s mother from Mobile. She sounded just like my great aunt who lived there. The story was ok but nothing fabulous.

Difficult to finish
Revisado: 05-04-23
I don’t know if I would have enjoyed this book if it had been read by a better narrator. It was all I could do to get through it, she was so bad. I won’t be purchasing any more in the series.

Another good story, rushed ending
Revisado: 10-15-22
I was on pins and needles waiting for this book to be released; I even preordered it! I have enjoyed this series immensely! The characters have become friends. This book was no different until the end. The ending felt rushed, like the author was running out of pages or ideas or time and just threw it together. It wasn’t even really what could be described as a cliffhanger. It was quite a disappointment. I am unable to determine whether there will be a sequel in the series or if this is how the story is to be left. I’m hopeful for another book to redeem the way this one ended. Bea Holland is an incredible narrator. She does a fabulous job and is a pleasure to listen to.
