Historia
When leading Princeton physicist Paul Steinhardt began working in the 1980s, scientists thought they knew all the conceivable forms of matter. The Second Kind of Impossible is the story of Steinhardt’s 35-year-long quest to challenge conventional wisdom. It begins with a curious geometric pattern that inspires two theoretical physicists to propose a radically new type of matter - one that raises the possibility of new materials with never-before-seen properties but that violates laws set in stone for centuries.

Incomprehensible to this EE
Revisado: 06-25-22
Incomprehensible, I'm only a rocket scientist, not a physicist. Maybe if you're a physicist this all makes sense. I'd call it a rambling kind of presentation. Not a simple explanation, and it starts out with Feinman's textbook and how great it is, not on the basic question, what in hell is a quasicrystal? Lost in the words.

The Puzzle Solver follows several years in which he desperately sought answers. Whitney's father, Ron Davis, PhD, a world-class geneticist at Stanford University whose legendary research helped crack the code of DNA, suddenly changed the course of his career in a race against time to cure his son's debilitating condition.

Nothing about leaky gut, gluten sensitivities, and other modalities. Dr. Gundry claims to have successfully treated this illness in some patients. So, was the author stuck on AMA modalities and treatments that dont work? It doesnt take much searching to find there are other alternative treatments. I know several doctors who claim this ailment can be overcome by diet, avoiding GMOs and Roundup which destroys your gut bacteria, etc. No mention. Perhaps this was a myopic author or written before modern times when such things were widely known? I was very disappointed to find the book just ends with essentially, we dont know what we are doing here and found no solutions. Yes, I get it that publicizing this illness and overcoming the beurocracy of know nothings is a great accomplishment. I do appreciate the efforts. But even writing a negative review of these modalities acknowledges the spirit of healing, that people dont have to just give up.

Should be titled how to clean a toilet
Revisado: 12-03-20
It might be worth buying for the first part of the book, it starts off great. But it degenerates into trivia of how to clean your house with unhelpful hints and nothing to do with cleaning your mind. I already know how to clean a toilet and how to wash my hands. What was he thinking?

Historia
Everyone has heard of DNA. But by itself, DNA is just an inert blueprint for life. It is the ribosome - an enormous molecular machine made up of a million atoms - that makes DNA come to life, turning our genetic code into proteins and therefore into us. Gene Machine is an insider account of the race for the structure of the ribosome, a fundamental discovery that both advances our knowledge of all life and could lead to the development of better antibiotics against life-threatening diseases.

Its a good book about the race to understand the ribosome, which makes proteins inside the cell. However, I'm only a rocket scientist and EE, with a few books under my belt in life sciences. I managed to read the entire book without learning what a ribosome is. The author does describe it briefly at the beginning, but it took me some time into the book to get used to his fast reading pace, and I did not follow the complicated discussion of unfamiliar cell structures that he wizzed through. Worst of all, he did add a few comparisons of a ribosome to a car engine, which I felt was totally out to lunch. I see no resemblance. Overall its a very interesting read, maybe on a graduate level, but if you take the time to look up ribosomes before you listen to the book you can probably follow along just fine.

horror story
Revisado: 05-13-19
Although this is by one of the present world's best writers, its basically a horror novel, not science fiction. There's a lot of fiction with almost no science. Or believable aliens. Its like the author doesnt really beleive in aliens. Not as good as his usual books. Written by an unbeliever, I would say. The ending seems kind of tacked together and doesnt really flow into the story. I guess they made a movie of this one, I havent seen it as I knew I wouldnt like it. I'm not into horror movies. His ideas about what aliens are like are more like hte 1930's than modern ideas. Bug Eyed Monsters.

short but sweet
Revisado: 05-13-19
Its extremely short, one hour, but extremely well written. I was hoping for an autobiography, but it is a personality story instead. I would love to read a biography of madame Curie written in this fascinating style. I recommend it for anyone who wants to know the real Madame Curie, who was this woman. For what she did, that would take a longer book. Her birth name may have been mentioned but if so it got lost in the telling somewhere, it was Maria Sklodowska . Way too short for such a good writer, disappointing because it is so very good and ends so very soon.

Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in this startling and engaging new work, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millennia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species's existence.

starts good
Revisado: 11-20-18
The book is perhaps ok, the first half is very informative. But I gave up on the second half, pedantic and academic discussions of one theory over another as to "human nature." The history is fine, the author's opinions as some important theory are myopic.

Historia
Here at last is a history of England that is designed to entertain as well as inform and that will delight the armchair traveler, the tourist, or just about anyone interested in history. No people have engendered quite so much acclaim or earned so much censure as the English: extolled as the Athenians of modern times, yet hammered for their self-satisfaction and hypocrisy. But their history has been a spectacular one.

Indeed good entertainment
Revisado: 11-11-18
I usually think of the stodgy english as confusing, stuffy, and supercilious. The War of the Roses, Cromwell, the Anglo Saxons, the Queen's dirty laundry, its all totally confusing to me, who lost track of England after they burned Washington in 1812 and left with their britches on fire. However, this author manages to unscramble all those years of Rule Britannia and even make some sense out of it. At least, to the extent anyone can understand the Brits. Dont give me any exams on English History, I still dont have a clue. But at least I understand the sequence of historical events instead of just a ball of wax in my brain. This author is very funny and keeps up very good humor to the very last, where as we all know the British always flag a little at the end. He is true to form there, I didnt give five stars as you can skip the end of the book. Its all about the dirty laundry of the Kings and the book has a little too much history of politics and the Lords, Wiggys, and The Common House of Plebians in it. Whoever would want to read a history of the Republican and Democratic parties in America? How dull. But I gritted my teeth and plowed on through the Parliamentary debates and plethora of laws passed so the Brits could "Keep calm and carry on." The Brits are so certain all their endless laws civilized the world they are fascinated with their parking tickets. I guess we showed them at Boston, I would like to have seen more on that tea crumples party in the book, but then, I'm a colonial myself. #Brittania #history #entertaining #clever #funny #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

boring details
Revisado: 11-03-18
I didnt get far, skipped ahead and the same boring normal relationship details. You can hear this by asking anyone to describe their relationship or marriage. Just day to day life, I found no illuminating or liberating or even interesting events here. We met at a bar, we dated, we got married. We met at church, we dated, we got married. To me its that bad. To honor all the work the author put into it, the story does have heart, that was noticeable. Critics are despised for not being able to write but just writing criticism. I would like to just say nice things. Maybe I just gave up too soon after I got bored. They do say you have 20 minutes to capture your audience, after that, you're dead.

A riveting investigation of the myriad ways that parasites control how other creatures - including humans - think, feel, and act. These tiny organisms can live only inside another animal, and, as McAuliffe reveals, they have many evolutionary motives for manipulating their host's behavior. Far more often than appreciated, these puppeteers orchestrate the interplay between predator and prey.

Revisado: 08-19-18
This is a rave book. I have some medical background but nothing to prepare me for this book. Its like I'm a robot being controlled by all my bacteria and parasitges, 100 TRILLION of them. Not a misprint. Its like Custers last stand. But luckily, unless youre dying of something, most of them are good guys protecting you. You are not alone! But your best friends are, well, critters.
