A drama, not much fantasy, no adventure. Still interesting

It's really just a <1 slice of life of a guy hired to be an octogenarian's butler. There's very little magic used, but it's enjoyable to see the character change over time and grow into the role of a butler. It's mostly well-written with consistent characterization. I say "mostly" because there were a couple instances of the 80 year old who has been experiencing memory loss for 10 years with no internet or TV using modern buzzwords unprompted. This isn't a spoiler and is evident from his first scene, but I also don't know why he pretended to be worse off mentally than he was for his niece.

I'm curious to have backstory filled in about why Shackelford is so revered in the world of people with "talents," but I'm not sure if it's enough to continue the series yet.

The narration is flat and more of a lecture tone. I gave it a few hours, but between it just being "stop telling people to cheer up and just listen and accept" and the author falling for the anti-racism grift, I'm not really confident she's helping.

There's not a lot of tension in the combat anymore due to power creep with the main cast, but the main cast is also fun and they're written consistently. Jeff Hays must be having an absolute ball with how he plays Chester.

Lacks Focus on the Market Idea

I was interested in reading a story focused around a market after listening to some books written by the narrator about a coffee shop and book store in a fantasy setting. Unfortunately, Jake's story leaves the market somewhere around 4 hours in and starts to focus on an interplanetary/metaversal setting and constant magical improvement for Jake. While Jake becomes focused on returning to his market, the rest of the story kind of meanders and few of the characters stick around for more than a couple hours and often feel underdeveloped. One couple, a woman and her wife, make it very clear that they are two married women, but disappear from the story entirely in maybe 20 minutes after their introductions and the woman even having a spouse could have been dropped entirely.

The story could use more another revision and look at by an editor. I will use two examples for this. Often, hardship and training are glossed over with, "and a few weeks passed as I worked on X skill," which robs some of the other characters of development, I think. Another issue is inconsistent language. When Jake meets a character whose gender he does not know/doesn't have one, he will refer to the character as "it". I find this the preferable gender-neutral pronoun, but the narrator seems to give it a negative inflection for the first few characters. However, when Jake goes back and reunites with a non-gendered character in the last third of the book, "it" becomes "they" for no reason, and this made that interaction a bit confusing. I often have trouble processing "they" used like this, but it is especially difficult when there are sentences like, "Character turned away to look at their monitors." And the next time Jake sees a character he doesn't know the gender of immediately, the author goes back to "it".

TL;DR: Doesn't focus on its selling concept, other characters are mostly glorified extras, and could use some revisions to tighten the language and narrative up.

So the cause of this isekai book to get off the ground is typical of many isekais, but also includes a bit of a real issue that is common with red pill communities with the protagonist coming home early and catching his wife cheating on him and then calling the cops on him over a fake domestic violence charge and setting a restraining order on him the night he spends in jail. As an MRA I appreciated this issue coming up. When the protagonist is met with an old Norse realm (with touches of Greek mythology) that has very old gender roles and actually explains the why of them mostly. Since I like history and mythology, I appreciated this as well even though it's not fully explained why women are so easy here until chapter 7. I think the author exaggerates how quickly women are to hop into bed in this sort of time period.

Around chapter 7 the book liked to pepper each chapter with at least one sex scene and I grew bored with it. It plays with love, but mostly just deals with lust and attachment.

Narrator was fine, but a bit dull.

Mad Max Parody Moves into Social Commentary

The first book is a decent parody of Mad Max/Fist of The North Star/post-apocalyptic westerns. The second book starts with the theming of small societies rising up from social groups.

The second book is "what if Renaissance Faire workers rebuilt society?" Decent, but doesn't really stand out beyond the premise.

The third was the most obvious commentary and shows when this was written. I can tell the author had a strong online presence with the college town of "Tollerance" and the hypocritical attitudes of SJWs at the time. I swear the Carey/Kari character was based off of "Big Red" from the Men's Rights protests going on in the mid-late 2010s. It was brilliant satire.

The second and third books each begin with a pre-apocalypse story that don't feel like they relate to the rest of the book in any way beyond romantic feelings.

Decent overall, but some parts dragged on longer than necessary. Could spend more time with exploring the world in the second half. The final battle and escape made me question how exhausted the characters weren't displaying.

As interesting a concept as an isekai protagonist switching classes and bodies for those classes is, the story just didn't grab me as much as other stories do. It may just come down to Tim knowing about isekai and being sort of happy to be in another world as a level 19 of 20 character, but needing to constantly relearn how his class works when he changes. Curious to have a largely atheistic setting when people regularly pop into the world represented by one of the deities being their patrons complete with an embroidered satchel showing a deity's symbol.

The editing at the start of this one feels off. There's also an outtake left in on chapter 7, just after 17:45 when Bishop is talking about how tequila affects him.
