Historia
Fish Creek, Wisconsin—Beautiful. Quiet. Isolated. Anonymous. It’s all that nineteen-year-old Elisabeth needs, and everything she wants. Cloistered in her tiny cabin, Elisabeth is determined to be alone, hiding from her memories and making sure that no one can ever hurt her again. But when a massive snowstorm strikes, plunging the town into darkness, Elisabeth finally allows herself to accept help from her neighbor, Noah, the town’s young sheriff. Forced to show him more vulnerability than she ever intended, Elisabeth realizes she can no longer outrun the scars of her childhood.

A great read, poorly read
Revisado: 03-04-25
DKG is brilliant and the stories in the book are fascinating. From her impeccable command of history and singular experience come memorable tales, vividly rendered. This is one I wish I had read, though, because listening to her awkward, unskilled reading was frustrating and distracting. Someone with theatrical training would have brought these marvelous stories to life, animating the authentic voice of the author smoothly.

A careful listen
Revisado: 02-01-25
The stories Dr Harper chooses to tell create a road map forward for her and for her audience. Even for someone familiar with and dedicated to practices she recommends, hearing her journey evokes new curiosity and affirmation.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Why to love novels
Revisado: 08-17-22
Masterful rendering of a story that matters, capturing a moment in history that relies on context to be appreciated and that resonates all these years later. Every element of this work is notable, and the reading is terrific. I am inspired to go buy the book in print just to have this recording inside my head as I return to places that moved me the most.

Important read
Revisado: 08-16-21
The reach of Epstein leaves the reader aghast, as does the amorality of far too many bit and lead players in this ongoing obscenity. I was not as interested in Brown’s personal story, though as a reflection of investigative journalism’s risk, it is compelling. Sickening to hear the extent of collusion and plenty of people still around to answer for the lives of the victims.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Instruction from another world
Revisado: 08-16-18
When a story can be captured in a way that resonates with a reader whose experience is, on paper, nothing like it, the story moves the reader profoundly. Even as I cringed at the violence and savagery Tara experienced as a child, I related to aspects of her childhood which she was able to describe with integrity, that transcended the sensational facts: living with a reality constructed by family, that could only be deconstructed by her curiosity in the larger world; figuring out which abstract truths presented as gospel, literally and figuratively, that she wanted to embrace in her own spirituality; stumbling through the process of unlearning and discovering for herself in a painful path to identity and authenticity and peace of mind. Her book is so much more than a tale of someone who grew up as few of us have. It is a compassionate, sensitive, courageous sharing of an extraordinary journey. While I was in awe of the mind and heart that put these words together, I was even more amazed by the kindness and sense of fair play with which they were imbued. I will think about this book for a long time.
