I came here after watching Dom Allen’s stint as Keeper on No Rolls Barred, because I watched that three times and wanted more, and found a treasure trove of scary stories mixed with dry humour. The fact that they just get straight to the story and don’t spend half the podcast discussing their personal lives is an added bonus. Recommended.

I think it’s fair to say that after William King was replaced by Nathan Long, the Felix & Gotrek stories started to feel a bit tired, and I was starting to feel like it was high time Gotrek found his Mighty Doom and the pair of them were gracefully retired. This caper, however, is Long’s best by far, worthy of William King’s glory days. It is hugely helped by the return of Greyseer Thanquol, the Skaven Dick Dastardly of Warhammer, as petty and incompetent as ever. The narrator does a sterling job as usual.

I came across this when another Enemy Within podcast I was following cancelled itself, and I went in search of other Enemy Within podcasts. At first I was not totally convinced. Half the podcast was solid WFRP actual play, and the other was culturally specific US in jokes that I didn't really get. Also I didn't understand why one of the players was doing a Russian accent when she was supposed to be from Warhammer Germany. Anyway, over time they stole their way into my affections and I grew to love this absurdist take on this Grimdark RPG classic - gun-loving Bruno Dicht and his delusions of grandeur, Mina Fischer, the Old World's worst Witch Hunter, blissfully unaware that her best friend is a witch, Lucky the moonwalking teenage Hedge Witch and his magic duck Griggs, and....um. The other one. At first it was Carl, painfully sincere and placing way too much faith in Bruno, then Mammoth the blood hungry Wild Man, then finally the delightfully shady 'Doctor' Webb, clearly some kind of closet necromancer, and his pet flesh golem Dennis. 'Bad GM' Dan tries to keep them in check but these guys are a law unto themselves, never taking themselves too seriously and wreaking a trail of havoc and silliness across the Old World that makes for the perfect entertainment package. This show is to grimdark what Terry Pratchett is to.....um, grimdark. Not especially grim, and not especially dark, but always hilariously funny. Highly recommended.

As others have noted, the foreward by Neil Gaiman is a bit intrusive and unnecessary, but otherwise a solid retelling of a fantasy masterwork.

How many trollslayers does it take to take out a dragon? Been meaning to read Gotrek and Felix for a while, but I’m glad I saved myself for this version. High fantasy hack and slash adventure at its finest.

One does not simply walk into the Chaos Wastes.....so it’s lucky that Felix and Gotrek have got a dwarf airship, piloted by a mad dwarf with a truly terrifying Scottish accent, at their disposal. Deadpan grimdark fantasy with the magic of Tolkien, the brutal politicking of GRRM, with shades of steampunk and horror, this is by far the best way to relive the glory days of the Warhammer Old World. Makes me want to dig out my old WFRP books and get roleplaying.

Although it wasn’t quite as laugh out loud funny as the first book (the viking invasion of Walmart was hilarious) this was definitely more engaging in narrative terms. Now that our heroes are no longer working for the US military industrial complex, and now they’re up against a real and terrifying antagonist, they’re much easier to root for. I liked the idea of the ensemble cast. I just wished they’d given a bit more thought to consistency in pronunciation, because the pronunciation was all over the place. In general though, a worthy enough piece of entertainment, with a compelling enough cliffhanger that I’ll probably stick around for the next one.
