Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Articulate expose
Revisado: 04-06-25
Sarah is an excellent writer and read her memoir with a charming voice and good inflection. It covers her aggressive pursuit of a job at facebook for its potential for good and her disillusionment as it became the platform for much untrue information. After reading this book, I’m not at all surprised that Mark Zuckerberg was sitting in a place of importance among other tech CEOs at Trump’s inauguration.

Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the 20th century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

It’s relevant, cautionary tale for the current USA
Revisado: 07-03-24
This classic originally written in 1959 by William Shirer was reissued in 1990 as Germany was reunited. It is well written and the performance is excellent. Shirer spent much of the time of the third Reich in Germany as a journalist. The book attracted me again because of current political activity in the United States. It is well researched, with original sources, and begins with Hitler’s youth through his death in April 1945. A basic takeaway outside the horror: He told the world what he would do, he told the German people what he would do, he was continually appeased and he continually did what he said he would do. A dictator is a dictator in 20th century Europe, such as Hitler, Mussolini and Franco, or 21st century US. The characteristics and behavior are the same today as they were then. History never repeats itself, but there are frequently great similarities!

Historia
By March 4, 1865, the Civil War had slaughtered more than 700,000 Americans. After a morning of rain-drenched fury, tens of thousands crowded Washington’s Capitol grounds that day to see Abraham Lincoln take the oath for a second term. As the sun emerged, Lincoln rose to give perhaps the greatest inaugural address in American history, stunning the nation by arguing, in a brief 701 words, that both sides had been wrong, and that the war’s unimaginable horrors - every drop of blood spilled - might well have been God’s just verdict on the national sin of slavery.

It Felt like I was in the room
Revisado: 05-13-24
This is my second book by Edward Achorn, both about Lincoln. The way he developed the characters and the story makes me feel like I am in the room as things were happening. His book still in lot between the lines of what I have learned from other Lincoln Biographies. Highly recommended.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Good information well presented
Revisado: 12-29-23
Liz Cheney has written a compelling and informative book. It was important to me to hear her detailed perspectives on what happened on January 6, from one who had been there, as well as much of the inside, deliberations and work of the January 6 committee. We have different opinions on the responsibilities of government, but I applaud her for taking a stand against Trump and articulating her story so clearly. Her reading of the book was effective.

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Learned so much in such a fun way
Revisado: 05-17-20
I love Bill Bryson‘s books. His research and self deprecating humor on topics from travel, England, houses, to this short history of science and, well, everything is always rewarding to me. And even though this book is now 17 years old, so much of it is about the history of discoveries that it is quite relevant. I’m looking forward to Bryson’s next book.

Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and LBJ, and illuminating the courage of influential citizen activists and civil rights pioneers, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. Each of these dramatic hours have been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back.

An excellent exercise in historical perspective
Revisado: 10-31-18
These are troubling times in American politics, regardless of one’s position. In this book the excellent popular historian Jon Meacham walks through the times of our “worst angels” and puts today’s issues in perspective. He characterizes leadership as based on hope or fear. He profiles the presidents who lead with Hope and accomplish much. He re-counts the times when fear prevailed, such as the KuKlux Klan and Joe McCarthy, and how through time and better leader ship we came out of those places. He makes the point that there is always struggle between hope and fear and it will never go away and ends with advocating for involvement in the political process reminding us that the people get the leaders they choose. It was a good 10 hour listen for me, helped me put our current times in Perspective and calmed me down. Good, listenable prose and a good performer.
