Historia
Two weeks have passed since the lights went out and in that time, Nicholas McNeil has assembled the equipment, a team of devoted survivors and has located a safe place to go hunker down. The catch is that it's over a thousand miles away. He is ready for a tough journey but as the miles grow longer he discovers he's not quite as prepared for what mankind is capable of until he's face to face with it. He discovers the once picturesque landscape has been replaced with brutality and barbarism.

What disappointed you about The Defiant: An Unbeaten Path?
(1) The book is not standalone, and ends mid-stream. So be prepared to buy all three+ books if you want to follow the story.(2) Mixing in the hocus-pocus of the "Magic Spear" nonsense, which of course will be found at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in Guthrie, OK in book three (or five, I don't know), is a huge disappointment. How about a magic ring that makes you turn invisible? Or maybe Luke can just use the Force. Everything other than that thread is at least reasonably realistic in an America vastly changed from an EMP (which is a REAL threat!).(3) Having the attack coming from a "Victor", a bad Russian trying to take over the world, is unnecessary to the rest of the story, making it read more than a bit James Bond-ish. And I don't care how rich you are, you're not going to be able to build a super-EMP and launch it from a cargo ship - that's the work of Governments, not super-rich diabolical geniuses
What could John W. Vance have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Eliminate the entire magic spear thread. Replace it with hordes of people driving up from southern Mexico and down from northern Canada, where the cars still work.
What about Joseph Morton’s performance did you like?
Mr. Morton's performance was truly outstanding, in fact I would rate this (along with the first book) as one of the best I've ever heard. There's always a very fine line in having a male voice actor reading the female or child parts, and he handles it very steadily. The foreign accents are OK, but the real brilliance comes in handling so many diverse parts without sounding ridiculously overdone.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Concern in the fact that America is wholly unprepared for such a nuclear EMP attack.
