Historia
Shrouded in scandal and secrets, Arilee Rutledge’s family is as tangled as the thorns surrounding their unwelcoming antebellum mansion. When her brother Davis returns from the Great War, she hopes they will make a new start after a season of devastation. But Davis is haunted by their younger brother’s death and his wife’s committal to the state asylum; while he loses himself in his work, Arilee continues raising his children. Determined to control at least one area of their lives, the siblings hire a former acquaintance to restore their dilapidated home.

It's no wonder Jennifer Q. Hunt is a favorite!
Revisado: 03-12-25
This book is filled with so many good things: history, family, faith, mystery, but also reality and difficult topics. I appreciated the inclusion of the details of restoring a historic home, early flight, and the hardships experienced by returning WWI veterans. Hunt has woven together an unforgettable tapestry and further beautified it with Scripture, hymns, and Shakespeare.

What would you do if you learned—from a podcast—that your dad (a pastor) was a serial sexual abuser? For Ryan George, this isn't a hypothetical question. He knew the faces behind the stories he heard. In fact, his mind flashed with memories of the abuse he'd endured from that same pastor as he listened to news that would change his life. In time, as he processed the destruction rampant in the cult of his youth, he found predatory behavior to be more of a feature than a bug of his former religion as both abuse and coverups were baked into its theology.

Important Perspective on "Deconstruction"
Revisado: 10-12-24
NOTE: The recorded version could use some edits—there are a few places the words just get cut off, but that does not take away from the overall performance—Ryan does an excellent job.
I love this book’s heart of reconstruction as opposed to deconstruction. Most of us have not suffered under a church leader like the author's father, but many of us carry wounds inflicted by the church or other religious atmospheres.
For those in that situation, there is much comfort and encouragement in this book. Sometimes, the author’s snark bothered me, but I understand he is still working through things, and even he admits that he will probably wish he had said things differently in 10 years.
Still, one has to applaud him for writing this much-needed book. He really does a very thorough job of describing his specific situation in such a way that it can apply to others’ experiences as well. There is hope and healing without deconstructing our faith and leaving it that way.

Historia
German-American novelist Erich Maria Remarque captured the emotional anguish of a generation in his World War I masterpiece, All Quiet on the Western Front, as well as in an impressive selection of novels, plays, and short stories. This exquisite collection revives Remarque’s unforgettable voice, presenting a series of short stories that have long ago faded from public memory. Eight Stories offers a beautiful tribute to the pain that war inflicts on soldiers and civilians alike, and resurrects the work of a master author whose legacy will endure for generations to come.

Shorter works from the masterful author of All Quiet on the Western Front
Revisado: 09-28-24
I have loved every one of Remarque's works, whether novel or short story, He has a way with words, painting reality with vivid descriptions and gut-wrenching honesty that somehow still comes out in sensitivity and beauty. Happy endings? No. But even if Remarque himself renounced his German identity, his stories retain that element so typical of German literature.
One might feel that the introduction is rather long. Of course, it allows the reader/listener to get to know a little more about Remarque as a person, and some background on each of the eight stories. If a listener wanted to skip past that, they easily could, but might miss some of the depth of the stories.
Published in Colliers Magazine in the 1930s, the stories themselves are short and worth listening to a second time. Feel the experience and suffering of the survivors of the first world war and those who loved them. Understand a conflict from the perspective of those who, at the time, were considered "the enemy." Many of the sufferings described were common on both sides of No Man's Land.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Fascinating Perspective
Revisado: 07-23-24
While I've no doubt that memoirs often have to be taken with a grain of salt, this is a fascinating book for anyone with an interest in espionage, WWII, or the Third Reich. i do wish the editing of the narration had been a little better, and I listened at 1.20x, but the content itself is very clearly written and translated. Sparked my interest in further reading into some topics.

An essential book for those who truly want to know
Revisado: 07-14-24
I loved the premise behind this book. Townsend includes enough backstory and discussion of theology to contribute to the narrative, but returns to the story at hand at just the right time.
There are people with whom this book will not resonate well, and some may even be offended by it. However, for those who want to see how God's love and forgiveness was extended to some of the highest ranking members of the Nazi regime, this is a fascinating account.
As far as the narration, I played it at 1.20x speed, which seemed to be a lot more natural. Otherwise, the narration was perfect.
I also regret not purchasing a hardcopy, because there are so many great quotes throughout.

Historia
Biblical scholars Brandon O'Brien and Randy Richards shed light on the ways that Western readers often misunderstand the cultural dynamics of the Bible. They identify nine key areas where modern Westerners have significantly different assumptions about what might be going on in a text. Drawing on their own cross-cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways.

A Must-Read for Western Christians
Revisado: 06-17-24
This is a very good first step in learning to read Scripture as it was intended, and not merely through our cultural lens. I only wish I had purchased a hard copy, because there are many things worth noting in this volume. The narration, however, was pleasant, if somewhat slow.
The authors bring wonderful firsthand experience to the table -- the book is rich with examples of ways in which other cultures view the world and interpret Scripture. They add a welcome touch of humor, too, and their style made it accessible to those who are not academics.

After 15 hours (audio edition) I was not ready for it to end. What a rich story Ms. Duffy has woven together, with truly engaging characters and a strong sense of scenery and history. There is also so much depth and application for the reader, with twists and turns and a sweet slow-burn romance too! Simply a must-read!

Two soldiers from opposite sides of the war. One Christmas meal that will change their lives forever. An action-packed historical thriller where survival is the only thing that matters, Sergei and Hans is a story of war, loss, and redemption. Set on the Eastern Front of WWI, on a cruel and unforgiving mountain, and later in a terrifying German prison camp, this fascinating story encapsulates real men and their struggles to survive a war unlike the world has ever seen. Both soldiers have their own stories to tell. They are Sergei and Hans.

Great story, worth a listen.
Revisado: 12-31-23
I loved the raw emotion of this book! At first I struggled to listen to the author's narration, but grew to love it as it fits the book itself so well. It could have been a drama or even a radio production (back in the day).
Whether at Christmas time or not, this is a great war and adventure story with two characters you will definitely connect with. It moves fast and is hard to stop listening too--building up until the very last seconds.
Readers may have difficulty with the unannounced shifting from one POV to another, but if one is patient they can usually figure out whose POV we are in--and often it is truly third person omniscient or first person (meaning Sergei's journal). Again, I think that just added to the rawness of the drama--a must for soldier stories, in my opinion.
