Historia
The dramatic account of one of America's most celebrated - and controversial - military campaigns: the Doolittle Raid. In December 1941, as American forces tallied the dead at Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt gathered with his senior military counselors to plan an ambitious counterstrike against the heart of the Japanese Empire: Tokyo.

Phenomenal book, phenomenal achievement
Revisado: 09-29-18
[Some spoilers ahead.] This is perhaps the best World War Two book I've ever read. A profoundly human story - alternately gripping, shocking, humorous, and deeply inspiring - it's evident that Mr. Scott has put his whole heart into this work. It's also abundantly clear that he invested unimaginable effort, meticulous labor of every kind, in order to bring to life the overarching story as well as the individual stories of many of Doolittle's Raiders. The back-home scenes and mood of America are also wonderfully captured. It's difficult for people like myself, whose parents were then children, to understand the emotions of a nation at war, and how all-consuming it was in the day-to-day. This book shed revealing light.
This was also a tremendous job of narration by the narrator, L. J. Ganser, who was very compelling. I made the mistake of listening to some of the details of the treatment and experiences of POW's, including their letters, while driving to work. I was wiping my eyes for many miles.
Don't be daunted by the 20-hour length of the audiobook. If you have more than a passing interest in World War Two or American history, you will wish it were longer. Highest recommendation.

Historia
On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen set sail from China. Its mission was to "proceed all the way to the ends of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. When it returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in China's long isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America 70 years before Columbus.

A compelling new way to understand the New World
Revisado: 08-03-18
The author does a fabulous job laying out his evidence for a claim that flies in the face of what every European and American is taught about the Age of Discovery. As it turns out, the famous Spanish and Portuguese explorers seem to have known exactly where they were headed and, in many cases, precisely how to get there. This book is about to whom they were indebted for that knowledge.
While the title and subtitle of a book like this could certainly produce instant skepticism, Mr. Menzies painstakingly brings out a wealth of archaeological, navigational, historical, and DNA evidence to buttress his assertions. For those not familiar with Chinese names, the audiobook can be a little difficult in spots, but the story is gripping and the narration is wonderful. By all means purchase and enjoy this book. I'm looking forward to other titles from this author and other readings by Simon Vance, too.

A great ride... possibly the best new canon novel
Revisado: 04-29-17
This is a wonderful re-introduction to Thrawn, and one that makes full use of Marc Thompson's amazing ability. You will not be disappointed as you journey with Thrawn on his way to the top, seeing that he was always in command, no matter what rank he was holding at the time. I regretted having the book come to an end, because I truly wanted more. The first Star Wars book that I've given three 5-star ratings.
MILD SPOILERS:
• Thrawn knew years before ROTJ that Palpatine's overconfidence would be his undoing.
• I'm quite sure he already knows *exactly* who Vader is!

Great fun for SW fans; great intro to Rebels cast!
Revisado: 04-03-17
Would you listen to A New Dawn: Star Wars again? Why?
I'd listen to this again at some point down the road. It's fresh, compelling, and sweet. The characters are all well drawn, and mostly enjoyable. More Vidian, please!
What was one of the most memorable moments of A New Dawn: Star Wars?
[SPOILER] The scene in which the male hero reveals his special abilities (I think you know what I mean) was handled very well and was true to how we know or have come to know the male and female heroes. I knew he had it in him.
Which scene was your favorite?
[SPOILER] A favorite scene for me was right in the beginning, seeing Kanan in the Jedi Temple interacting with other Padawans and a certain gentleman who one day won't seem to recall ever owning a droid.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I have to admit it got to be difficult to put down.
Any additional comments?
This book was a breath of fresh air after dutifully slogging through the Aftermath books. This feels like Star Wars in its most elemental sense: mystery, characters I care about, and swashbuckling action.
Marc Thompson hits another home run. He sounds authentically like Kanan Jarrus and yet it's not forced in any way. I hope he was paid extra to power through the Sullustan accent of the female supporting character, but he did a great job, just as he has elsewhere.

Easily the best of the three, and great teasers...

Would you listen to Empire's End: Aftermath again? Why?
There was some tough sledding here, but the payoffs were worth it. The Aftermath story could have been made into one long book, or a 2h 30m movie and been quite enjoyable. The dense writing style and constant resort to the present tense was making me roll my eyes at times.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Thoroughly enjoyed the two competing Grand Admirals, and thankful that Temmin has finally grown up and become Greg Grunberg. The idea of what may lie beyond the SW Galaxy is tantalizing and was handled very well. The scenes involving the Emperor were the best scenes in the book, and Chuck Wendig conveyed the menacing presence of Palpatine very skillfully. The least interesting part was the Sinjir romance. Was this an exercise in being PC, along with the gender-neutral pronouns for the pirate? Good grief.
What does Marc Thompson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Marc Thompson was a stupendous narrator. I cannot believe the versatility he brought to the characters.
Any additional comments?
On the whole, do listen to this. If not, Mon Mothma will find a way to convince you to do it and make you think it was your idea all along.

I think Ms. Lowndes must be a delightful person to know, but I think much of the book was like a trip back to 1981. It pains me to say that because are some good nuggets here. Belabored.
