In a speculative future, Abel, a menial worker, is called to serve in a secretive and fabled jury system. At the heart of this system is the repeat room, where a single juror, selected from hundreds of candidates, is able to inhabit the defendant's lived experience, to see as if through their eyes.

Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

Dialogue and scene making…both excellent. Rooney plunges into the thoughts of two brothers in this novel. A new approach for her. A bit sappy at the end but she earned it.

Historia
Along the glittering coast of southern France, a white villa sits atop an earthen terrace-a site of artistic genius, now subject to bitter dispute. Eileen, a new architect known for her elegant chair designs, poured the concrete herself; she built it as a haven for her and her lover, and called it E-1027. When the hulking Le G, a founder of modernist architecture, laid eyes on the house in 1929, he could see his influence in the sleek lines-and he would not be outdone. Impassioned, he took a paintbrush to the clean, white walls . . .

Stunning
Revisado: 09-12-24
Beautiful language and elegant spiraling of subtle plot: the narcissistic and colonial attitudes of one architect (male) violating another (female) in ways both shocking and yet strangely inevitable (perhaps because the backdrop is Hitler’s brutal invasion of France and the lack of resistance from the French)…sensory evocation is impressive as is the distinct portrayal of the idiosyncratic internal landscapes of the two architects. Stunning!

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Well told tragedy with lots of verisimilitude
Revisado: 06-06-24
Liked the characters and the character-driven storytelling. Lots of quotidian moments and warm friendship scenes, which softens the relentless sorrow of Jude’s tragic life. Plus beautifully read….

Historia
The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

Historia
Tom Lowe’s identity and his pride are invested in the work he does with his back and his hands. He designed and built his family’s dream home, working extra hours to pay off the adjustable rate mortgage he took on the property, convinced he is making every sacrifice for the happiness of his wife and son. Until, in a moment of fatigued inattention, shingling a roof in too-bright sunlight, he falls. In constant pain, addicted to painkillers at the cost of his relationships with his wife and son, Tom slowly comes to realize that he can never work again.

Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Historia
In seventh-century Ireland, a scholar and priest called Artt has a dream telling him to leave the sinful world behind. Taking two monks—young Trian and old Cormac—he rows down the river Shannon in search of an isolated spot on which to found a monastery. Drifting out into the Atlantic, the three men find an impossibly steep, bare island inhabited by tens of thousands of birds, and claim it for God. In such a place, what will survival mean?

And beautifully narrated. Was riveted by this unusual survival story. Art, the so-called saintly monk, is a monster indeed. Love the accumulation of detail surrounding the young and old monks’ ingenious plans for survival on their rock island with their pious task master. Ending is perfect!

Deep understanding of a complex character and situation. Bravo to this writer. Book gets better as it moves forward. Writing at the beginning is full of cliches. Then the writer hits his stride…and the book takes off….

Historia
A young Swedish immigrant finds himself penniless and alone in California. The boy travels East in search of his brother, moving on foot against the great current of emigrants pushing West. Driven back again and again, he meets naturalists, criminals, religious fanatics, swindlers, Indians, and lawmen, and his exploits turn him into a legend. Diaz defies the conventions of historical fiction and genre, offering a probing look at the stereotypes that populate our past and a portrait of radical foreignness.

Highly recommend this riveting book. Just wish the reader hadn’t felt the need to play to the balcony with his acting. The writer’s wonderfully cinematic and sensory rich prose should have been read in a more natural way. The story wins out…couldn’t stop listening.
