I would have settled for liking it. I was so depressed listening to this book. I wish the human race had never evolved to defile this Earth. Of course, the evil white man is responsible for every ill that has ever befallen the native people and all the creatures on the planet. I wanted to scream, "Stop lecturing me. I didn't do it! It wasn't me!". Seems to be an exercise in Native American Blame Game with zero solutions.

I have no idea why it has taken me this long (I'm 70) to "read" this book. I will say that I am lucky that I listened to this version. The narrator, Anna Massey, was brilliant. So much so, I had to look at her profile on line and was sad to find she passed away several years ago. I was not surprised to read this about Ms. Massey on her Wikipedia page: "One of Massey's assets as an actress was her 'extraordinary voice... it was so listenable'." Of course, I also read more about the author, Daphne du Maurier, renowned for her "narrative craft". du Maurier supposedly had a hard time writing "Rebecca" but it felt as if the words breezed in her stream of consciousness narrative. I specifically liked the way she wrote from the 2nd Mrs. DeWinter's point of view. The character obsessed over so much of her relationship with her husband yet when an actual conversation between the two happens, the husband says, "Oh, I forgot all about that." Classic male/female perspectives. The story is now a favorite and I'll listen to Anna Massey read laundry lists but thankfully, she has narrated other Audible books.

I'm 70 years old and never "read" this classic until now. It IS too overly Christian, and it does have echoes of "The Wizard of Oz". And "Sleeping Beauty". Just proves there is nothing new in the world of storytelling. I was shocked at the general reference of evil as "The Black Thing". It infuriates me that Christian thinkers believe black is evil ala "the color of sin/the color of skin". The protagonist, a young girl, is surrounded by male figures (father, brother, school friend). Her male family members let her down and I am perplexed why the author felt compelled to include the male school friend unless it is her subtle message that a female needs a male in her life. She has three "fairy godmothers" (the three crones, the three witches. nothing new here) who would lose in a wand battle with Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather ("Cinderella"). The author includes flat out sermonizing. The science is low key, which is a shame. Overall, I found the story messy and extremely disappointing. I expected more.

I wish Audible would state up front a book is a "Christian" book or is a "religious themed" book. I would not have purchased this book if I had known that. The story is reed thin. The author cannot decide if the grandmother is the most annoying, complaining woman on the planet or a saint. I got tired of the character's whining. I got tired of the protagonist's immaturity. The author is a creative writer so there are some high points if you enjoy good writing (there is a difference between being a good writer and being a good storyteller). The narrator was OK. Her grandmother voice made me think of a grown up "Edith Ann" (if you remember Lily Tomlin's little girl character).

Yes, this is a very basic book and I nearly stopped listening when I heard this in Chapter 3:
"Just as the light of the moon is growing, the magic within us is growing, too. The waxing crescent is the part of the lunar cycle when you start to make shit happen. A time to put a plan in place." Seriously?? "Make shit happen?" And this is not the last time the "author" can't find proper English to express herself. Within a minute, this is what you hear: "I resonate with the vibe in the air at this time. I like that go go go make shit happen energy." This word pops up at least one more time before the end of the reading. I have no patience for so-called authors who cannot express themselves better than this and I am extremely surprised that Audible thought this book was a good idea.

I listened to this a long time ago. I listened again today. My husband is turned in to the news of the travesty in Ukraine every waking hour. I put in my ear buds and am instantly taken to a more peaceful place by Kent Newborn's voice and words. I need to listen to this every week. This is a time when we all need to accept the small graces we are given as often as possible.

People - she returned the bra! YUCK.

The author tells a story of the time she traveled to NYC to meet with an established You Tube personality. She forgot to pack a bra. Really? Someone who admits she is obsessed with clothes forgets a bra?

Her mother had to call several stores to find out if bras were sold there. In NYC. She said she went to a "ton of different stores". IN NEW YORK CITY. Really? The author admits she is a shop-a-holic and she doesn't know what stores sell bras?

The author bought a new bra but wore it with the tags on it so she could return it later.

She spent a great deal of time detailing her expenses before she mentions this and justifies her disgusting act by saying money was tight. REALLY? An "emergency bra" would cost $20. All I could think about was her sweaty underboob smell on a bra she had the nerve to return that another woman might buy.

No matter what she said before or after could wipe that from my mind. Nothing. And it makes me wonder how many times she has done this!

I was hesitant to post a review about a blind person being self-centered, narcissistic, condescending, arrogant and rude. Words I also hesitated to use but words used by many other reviewers. The author says that she hates it when people give disabled people credit for doing normal things so she shouldn’t mind getting credit for being a shallow human being.

One more thing. Nearly every less than stellar review mentions her horrible narration. As Molly herself said, "not everyone is born to read an audiobook, you know. It's a talent!" Hmmmm....

I thought this was a follow-up to Susan Cain's "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Cannot Stop Talking". Well it is, but here is what the title - "Quiet Power: The Secret Strength of Introverts" - does NOT say. This book is about kids. Not quite bait and switch but definitely misleading. Only after starting to listen to this book did I squint to be able to see the TINY print on the Audible photo of the book that says it is a guide for kids and teens. I did not bother to read the reviews since I read Cain's first book and I thought I knew what I was getting. Read the publisher's summary on the Audible page and please tell me if there is a SINGLE word that says the book is for kids and teens. You suckered me Audible and Susan Cain. Totally suckered me. The narrator has a nice soothing voice so I will finish this book using it as a sleep aid - NOT for the content.

I logged onto Audible when I hit Chapter 4. I thought maybe it was just me who found the narration out of sync.
When most every reviewer complains about the sing-song narrative, I was 1.) gratified it wasn't just me and 2) sad because I really wanted to listen to this book, but not sure I can finish it. Think this is going to be a regular read for me to finish it.

Kate Mulgrew is Amazing

I would have stopped listening to this book early on if it were not for Kate Mulgrew. The story is too drawn out and wanders too much. There are a lot of holes. One in particular is when the FBI and police have surrounded Vic's father's house. They are convinced Vic is behind her son's disappearance. At the end of this section, a police detective shoots her dad and then Vic & Lou escape by using her Triumph and her secret bridge. And that's it. No reaction from the FBI & police about a bridge appearing out of nowhere. Nothing about a law enforcement officer basically murdering her dad. It's also fuzzy about how Vic and her son escape at the end - especially when she had handcuffed the boy's dad. How did he get out of that? It's also annoying that the author has to explain the book's themes at the end. Kate Mulgrew: Bravo. Joe Hill; Meh.
