I'm an American who has been speaking German for over 30 years. I am able to read Dutch but had no idea how to speak it. This was the only course available on CD, so I figured, what the heck, and bought it. I played it at various times during my car journey from Michigan to Pennsylvania. I've now learned that what you see (as in reading) is not what you get (as in saying the written words)! I almost always wanted to refer to the little booklet that comes with the CD, which is a mean feat if one is steering a car. It would have been better in an airplane, I guess. All in all, I thought the American voice went on and on for too long, and Dutch wasn't spoken nearly enough. I've studied other foreign languages through other methods, and I find this particular entry to be very weak, although the German section in this series is pretty good.

I didn't learn Swedish until I was an adult, and then I could only attend evening classes once or twice a week. As a learning tool combined with formal education, this series is a real help. I used to listen to the tapes in between classes, especially while commuting to my adult education center, and on the way back home. In the car, when I got tired of radio or other music, I'd stick this cassette in the player. It really helped me in my studies of the language, and I wish there were a Level Three.

A Great Study Help

I first started learning Swedish part-time at night while I was living in Germany. Between classes, I would listen to this tape (and Level 1) on the way to the instruction, or in the car if I had a long tedious drive on the Autobahn. The other listener has a point that this method is almost pointless unless one is having formal instruction, but as a "snack" taken between the "main meals" this program was quite good. It kept me from forgetting my vocab between classes. My native-speaker teacher found it interesting, too, and lent it to her son in order to practice English.
