Great book, acronym definition should be repeated
Revisado: 04-11-21
This book taught me negotiating methods that I used while I was listening to it. It's a great book that anyone in any station of life should hear. One important thing though, the acronym BATNA is only defined one time, so if you miss it in an audio book, you're out of luck. I found it extremely frustrating that it was never repeated, so here it is:
Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement = BATNA
The narrator was almost obnoxiously good. He seemed a bit smug. Probably because I didn't know what a BATNA was or how it was spelled. It was the end of the book before I thought to Google it. I asked Alexa and she didn't know. She thought I was saying "patina". Now I feel like I have to listen to the book all over again.

Poe's masterpiece read by 5* narrator
Revisado: 11-11-20
Perhaps you've read this tale decades ago, checking it off a required reading list. In the wake of the pandemic, and while the country is under unusual leadership, I'd implore you to read it again. The timing urgently couldn't be any better with gatherings at the White House resulting in mass cases of covid-19. It's as if my cousin Edgar presciently penned this 6 page, 16 minute short story to foretell these events. You won't be disappointed, but you may feel a chill on the back of your neck.
Patrick Lawlor is such a talented narrator, I plan to seek out other titles narrated by him. His musical voice captures the rhythm intended in a seemingly effortless performance.

One of the most significant books ever written by a head of state, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

Splendid performance!
Revisado: 04-22-19
Meditations is beautifully narrated here, so it felt like being in the theater of the round, hearing a lecturer in the ancient times. I studied stoic philosophy when I was in college in the early 80's, so this awakened ideas nestled deep inside my cells that have been hibernating for over 30 years. It's incredible to consider the year of his writings was in the 100's AD. There is truly nothing new under the sun and all of the lessons contained within this book will lead you to a happier life now if you apply them.

Historia
It is a chilling story that begins in the 1970s, when Trump made his first splash in the booming, money-drenched world of New York real estate, and ends with Trump’s inauguration as president of the US. That moment was the culmination of Vladimir Putin’s long mission to undermine Western democracy, a mission that he and his hand-selected group of oligarchs and Mafia kingpins had ensnared Trump in, starting more than 20 years ago with the massive bailout of a string of Trump hotel and casino failures. This book confirms the most incredible American paranoias about Russian malevolence.

I thought I'd heard everything there was to hear
Revisado: 04-07-19
I thought I'd heard everything there was to hear, but there was so much more in this book. This compilation of history reaches way back into the 70's and 80's, pulling the thread through to present day. I follow Olga Lautman @olgaNYC1211 on Twitter and know this information was incredibly well researched. I didn't even realize she was working on it, but learning that tidbit gave this book even more gravitas.
I must warn you that it was terrifying and I had already read "Russian Roulette", "Fascism", "Fire & Fury" and "Fear" (which is basically fact checking Fire & Fury), Comey's book, Malcolm Nance's books, etc.
My husband's grandparents came here from Russia before WWII, so we had heard second hand stories about the gulag and my father-in-law was alarmed when Putin was installed as president. I asked why and he laughed incredulously, saying only "he's KGB! He's KGB! You don't need any other reason." The details in this book about Putin and Russia are fascinating, if not terrifying. When you take the long view at our country under current leadership, it's not difficult to imagine us slipping into a mob-run dictatorship just like what happened to poor mother Russia. My husband has family there (that he doesn't know) and the situation breaks my heart. Thank you for filling in the blanks on the Russian side. There's absolutely no way Trump could be exonerated. There's no way.

On March 16, 2018, just 26 hours before his scheduled retirement from the organization he had served with distinction for more than two decades, Andrew G. McCabe was fired from his position as deputy director of the FBI. President Donald Trump celebrated on Twitter: "Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy." In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career and an impassioned defense of the FBI.

The performance of this book was stellar
Revisado: 04-07-19
Andrew McCabe could easily begin a new career as an actor, voiceover artist or narrator for other Audible books. The style of narration reminds me of Jim Morrison on "An American Prayer". It's hard to stop listening and his integrity rings through clearly.
This book, like Comey's, offers a glimpse into the lives and behind the scenes of those who serve in the FBI. There were a few parts where I became overwhelmed by a deep sadness for them as they toil under the assault of constant insults from the very person who should be supporting them.
I'm not sure I learned anything new about Trump-Russia, but that's only because I've listened to approximately 25 books on the subject now. After hearing the same stories told so many times by completely different and unrelated people, it's hard to believe the Mueller Report doesn't contain the evidence which backs it all up. The mob vibe of this administration is palpable and we have seen a lot of the problem with our own eyes, heard first-hand with our own ears. I can't believe they are going to let him get away with what I believe is treason and a deep involvement in international mafia scene(s). I read this book before the Barr Letter was released, before Mueller turned in his report. I would not have imagined less than an indictment after all I've read in so many books.
Anyway, this book, like Comey's, was extremely good and well performed; it stands alone telling stories about other topics as well as the current administration and its ties. I strongly recommend listening to it. You will love it.

"Wake up to the miracle you are," he directs. "Here's what you've forgotten: You're a f--king miracle of being." Now, as we face immense challenges on our planet - including climate change, the threat of nuclear war, and the development of artificial intelligence - he turns his attention to the most urgent issues facing us. Will humanity survive? Should we colonize space? Does God exist? I have half of a BFA and grasp the theories (less the math behind it) Stephen Hawking has laid out for us. Oddly optimistic and uplifting somehow. I will listen to this repeatedly. It also moved me to tears a couple of times. Fantastic break from listening to political books. Strongly recommend.

Plato's Allegory of the Cave is what many believe to be the foundation of Western Philosophy. It addresses what is visible and invisible, seen and observed versus intuited and imagined, and what is public versus private and just versus unjust. It also concerns the meaning and importance of education, the state of the soul, the conflict between truth and beauty, animal urges versus higher aspirations, knowledge versus ignorance, and on and on.

Greatest story about government ever written
Revisado: 05-17-18
I love the Allegory of the Cave and believe governments should be based on it. I think it should be a test before electing someone. Have they ever been poor or faced real diversity and overcome, rising to a great leader? A certain "POTUS" probably wouldn't be holding office right now if this were a rule. There would be no way to cover it up or cheat this.
The narration was ok, but the regional accent is from my region and made me very aware of it. haha It was somewhat annoying and the book surrounding it overall is not well organized so was a little difficult to follow as an audio book. It seems to be a teacher's aide book, so I would recommend getting it in print for that purpose. That said, if you don't like to read classical literature, I highly recommend going this route. This information is important and just as relevant today as it was in the time it was written.

Alarming details are revealed in this book
Revisado: 05-17-18
How can people have read this book and not be removing these people from office? That was my first thought. I have been submerged in books on this topic, news and cable news, and I thought I knew all of it. Well, I didn't. I think there's too much for any one person to know. The corruption is so thick and tangled, it's terrifying. I'm alarmed the Trump administration is still in power. It feels like an emergency to get him out as soon as possible and that would only be the first step~!
The narrator had a stilted kind of delivery for me, putting emphasis on what we'd consider stage direction in theater "he said", etc. Once you get used to it, it was ok, but having seen David Korn on cable news hundreds of times, I wish he had read it himself. Definitely get this book and Comey's if you are worried about the country.

Since Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, the country—and the world—has witnessed a stormy, outrageous, and absolutely mesmerizing presidential term that reflects the volatility and fierceness of the man elected Commander-in-Chief.

Mind Candy for Never Trumpers and Liberals alike
Revisado: 05-17-18
This book gave the feeling that you were a spectator at the White House and is told in a conspiratorial, friendly manner. His voice has a na-na quality pretty much throughout, but if you hate what is happening right now, that can be very comforting. While people questioned at first how much was real, the more that's revealed by the news every day makes me think it might all be true. It sounds insane because the people are insane, perhaps.
This book is not going to break the case wide open so if you are looking for that, try Russian Roulette or Comey's book, but this one is more like a comfort food =) You come away thinking you know all the players personally in a "high school" kind of way. If you've had any trouble fleshing out the personality of any of the players, this book will do it~!
