Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

I loved the premise of The Witching Hour
Revisado: 01-22-23
I saw the first episode of the TV series and decided to read the book first.
I enjoyed it for the most part in the beginning. Anne Rice is/was an exceptional writer. I feel the book was too long and could have benefited from a skillful editor.
Toward the last few hours of the book, I must admit that I did a lot of fast-forwarding because Rowan and Michael became unlikeable and boring to me. After 50 hours, a reader is usually rewarded with a satisfying ending, even if there is a sequel in the works, e.g., Diana Gabaldon Outlander series. That did not happen for me with the Witching Hour.
I read the reviews for the sequels, and I decided that I'm not interested in reading more about Michael and Rowan.
I love generational sagas, and this was a doozy. All the incest was unnerving, but I guess Anne Rice needed it to propel her story.
Overall, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed listening to Kate Reading and the premise of the story I give 5 stars.

Historia
Seven years ago, Miles Pussett was a steeplechase jockey, loving the rush of the race. But after an unfortunate event, he left horseracing behind and swore he would never return. Now he gets his adrenaline rush from riding headfirst down the Cresta Run, a three-quarter-mile Swiss ice chute, reaching speeds of up to eighty miles per hour. Finding himself in St Moritz during the same weekend as White Turf, when high-class horseracing takes place on the frozen lake, he gets talked into helping out with the horses. Against his better judgement, he decides to assist.

Boring!
Revisado: 07-31-22
I've read, listened to, and enjoyed Dick Francis's stories. When Felix took over, I was initially skeptical, but I found that he was almost as talented as his father. This book did not measure up to the usual standards of both authors. "ICED" was boring and disappointing. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, but sadly after 10 hours, nothing ever did.

Revisado: 09-28-20
This book is just as great as the other four before it. I haven't read any other Harry Potter books, but I have been a fan of Cormoran Strike and Robin Endicott since The Cuckoo's Calling. It had me guessing until the very end!
I'm looking forward to the next adventure.

My monthly "first reads" are usually disappointing. This story did not disappoint. It had me from the beginning to the end. The narrator also did a wonderful job.

Historia
"Tell me what happened while there's still time," demands the dying Senator Adam Sunraider to the itinerate Negro preacher whom he calls Daddy Hickman. As a young man, Sunraider was Bliss, an orphan taken in by Hickman and raised to be a preacher like himself. Bliss's history encompasses the joys of young southern boyhood; bucolic days as a filmmaker, lovemaking in a field in the Oklahoma sun. And behind it all lies a mystery: how did this chosen child become the man who would deny everything to achieve his goals?

Revisado: 08-12-19
In the first 30 minutes the editor explains what the book is about. If not for that, I would not have been able to follow the book at all. I loved Invisible Man and I had never heard of Juneteenth, so I was excited to read another Ralph Ellison novel.
I was able to follow it in spots, but in the last two hours of the book, I closed it, I just couldn't finish. Instead of a flowing cogent novel, I felt that I was in the middle of the author's disjointed dream. I'm going to listen to Invisible Man again, and I'm profoundly sorry that I couldn't like Juneteenth.

Revisado: 03-18-19
I really enjoyed the story. The narration was a little disconcerting at times because of the various characters and the story from their point of views. The end was such a disappointment! After investing all that time in listening, the ending was a letdown. Maybe I misunderstood it, but the ending reminded me of the Dallas episode when Bobby Ewing is killed. When the new season starts, he's in the shower and the whole previous episode was just Pam Ewing's dream.

Revisado: 02-12-19
I really enjoyed this story and I couldn't put it down. I usually just listen to a book a couple of hours a day on my walk.
But with this book, I couldn't turn it off when I got into the house, I had to know what was coming next. Very satisfying ending!!

Mesmerizing and Enthralling
Revisado: 06-03-18
This is my first Robert Goddard book. I chose it because of the reviews. The reviews are accurate in their praise.
This story kept me interested from start to finish. I listen to books while I walk and I was so curious to know what was going to happen next, that I listened to it in my non walking hours, because I couldn't put it down.
The characters are well written and compelling. The plot was a crooked line that I was eager to follow.
I downloaded another Robert Goddard book, "Past Caring" and I hope I enjoy that book as much as I enjoyed this one.

Jefferson Tayte is a character that is ordinary and yet extraordinary at the same time. I'm looking forward to each new novel. Simon Vance also does and excellent job as narrator!!
