Historia
Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon's mentor is kidnapped, Langdon's only hope of saving him is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him.

Retread @ best, plagerism @ worst. Still not good.
Revisado: 10-08-09
To start I gave the Davinci Code 5 stars. Unfortunately I can only give this trash 1 star.
The idea of gnostic or believing in the divinity within is a great premise as it refers to the ancient mysteries. The problem is that he made it so boring I don't care to even google the subjects he talks about.
The idea for this book is obviously from about 10 other books that have already done the "look within" premise. He did add some history and cool tricks but nothing like the Davinci Code.
So far our hero Robert (a professor wearing a jacket and scarf) has outran Interpol, numerous secret societies trying to kill him, falling from a helicopter, being drowned & held at gun point 100 times yet he is alive! Demons & angels made Langdon into an unbelievable Rambo type doing the craziest things and living.
To add to the bad & retread story the writing was bad. It seemed like he tried to go for the Clancy style intricate details but here it read as boring and over reaching.
When I read Dan Brown I'm looking for fiction that moves into some reality. This book not only made no sense in reality but makes Noetic Sciences seem trivial when it really is an emerging science with proven results not just a Langdon characters dream.

One night when he was 10, Tyler stood in his backyard and watched the stars go out. They flared into brilliance, then disappeared, replaced by an empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives.

New ideas in a great read!
Revisado: 08-30-08
First and foremost.... EXCELLENT. I loved this book and the mind bending ideas it made me ponder.
I felt with the characters and hoped for them.
The only thing I didn't like was the authors use of perspective in telling the story. It was both omniscient & 3rd person. Made you break the realm to figure out who was talking. Other then that, A .
PS. the Axis the next book is not good. we get new characters, no sci fi, and an author trying to shed his Sci Fi past.... fails.

From Hypothertical to Pathetic , let down!
Revisado: 08-30-08
First, I loved Spin. This book while having a few things in common with the Spin is not the same story.
They leave Spin in a great place to start a 2nd book. Instead we get all new characters and a great premise that was wasted.
The idea of what this book could have been.... contact and it's excitement. Instead the author goes preachy and gets caught up trying to make a sociology story showing how smart he is. He tried to downplay the SciFi and go Brides of Madison County on us...
The reason I liked Spin was because of the hypothetical mystery, and the characters motivations to learn more.
Axis has weak characters, no mystery, no big ideas, and a blatant attempt by the author to prove he is just not SciFi. He failed at it.

Historia
In six minutes, one of us would be dead. None of us knew it was coming. So says Wes Holloway, a once-cocky and ambitious presidential aide, about the day that changed his life forever. On that Fourth of July, Wes put Ron Boyle, the chief executive's oldest friend, into the presidential limousine. By the time the trip came to an end, Wes was permanently disfigured, and Boyle was dead, the victim of a crazed assassin.

Long & boring
Revisado: 06-04-07
Sometimes an author can over do the building of sympathy to the point you want the hero to just die already and quite crying.
The book was long and didn't have anything to keep you listening. You think it can't get more boring.. something must happen soon. It doesn't.
Poor story executed poorly. Ending was uneventful and made me feel like I wasted 18 hours.
If you must listen to this get the abridged...I can't think of anything you would really miss.

Very fun read
Revisado: 05-30-07
I was very impressed with the author's imperfect characters and our hero's realizations of each other.
The story is fluffy action and a plot that holds up and isn't predictable nor ridiculous.
First book I read of this author..... will read another.

Revisado: 05-24-07
Great listen! I found the book fun & it was one of a few that would keep me listening in my driveway long after I arrived.
The subject of the book has a special meaning as my Grandma was a devotee to Mary (not Jesus), following our families traditions for generations. Many of the stories I have heard from my mom & grandma before.
Great use of legend/history in weaving a rich story. Better then the DaVinici Code & much better written.

good till the end.
Revisado: 05-24-07
The book is good, reading is good. You move quickly through the story & feel drawn into it.
The only problem is the same with most of the "DaVinci Knock Offs (historic thrillers"...... bad or incomplete ending. The lack luster "keep the status quo" endings are junk & we have seen it a hundred times before.
Don't know if I will read the author again.... seems like another guy trying to cash in on the fad without a well defined story ....beginning..middle... end.... simple reciepe

Historia
When Autobiography of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. The New York Times hailed it as "a rare account". Newsweek pronounced it "fascinating". The San Francisco Chronicle declared, "Yogananda presents a convincing case for yoga, and those who 'came to scoff' may remain 'to pray." Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East.

Cult Leader and no true pure soul
Revisado: 06-07-05
First, I do yoga and have studied the Sutras and masters for years. Ananda is nothing more then a con-man. He speaks as he is an Avatar or Godlike yet he partakes in behaviors that show differently.
He teaches a "modified" version of Hinduism to give himself more power. The oppisite of what a real Guru would do. He teaches his brand as if Americans don't know the truth. Maybe 20 years ago, now he looks like a Television Evangilist.
That said, some of his words are verbatim from the Sutras and others works. So he can cut and paste thats deep wisdom.
His cult followers are some of the nicest people I have met. Just beware of those who tell you they are spiritually better then you. That is a good sign that they lack the one thing that makes them spiritual, humility.
Don't follow him follow yourself.

First, I would like to thank Thomas' review for showing me satan! I find it great that a religious zelot who never read the book has taken it upon himself to let me know where the devil is. Go read the gnostic gospels & get back to us! NOw fo rthe review.
Good book, mostly a review of other spirit guide books. Easy to listen to. If your an expirienced reader of this subject I would suggest something else. If you are new to this subject then this book gives a great foundation & explains common thoughts on the subject very well.
