Historia
New York Times best-selling author Kristen Green draws on years of research to tell the extraordinary and little-known story of young Mary Lumpkin, an enslaved woman who blazed a path of liberation for thousands. She was forced to have the children of a brutal slave trader and live on the premises of his slave jail, known as the “Devil’s Half Acre”. When she inherited the jail after the death of her slaveholder, she transformed it into “God’s Half Acre”, a school where Black men could fulfill their dreams.

A story I’d like to read, but poorly written
Revisado: 11-11-22
This book started with a half-hour prologue, which is excessively long. There was too much repetition and I agree with another reviewer that it was “preachy.” I plowed forward thinking that the actual story would get better. But, after an hour, I just couldn’t take it any more. This is just not good as an audiobook. It could’ve been written more like an historic novel. Maybe I’ll like the PDF version better. Clearly, it’s a story that needs to be told—just not like this. Sadly, if I could return it, I would.

Historia
Former child actor Fiona St. James dropped out of the spotlight after a spectacularly public crash and burn. The tabloids called her crazy and self-destructive and said she’d lost her mind. Now in her late twenties, Fiona believes her humiliating past is firmly behind her. She’s finally regained a modicum of privacy, and she won’t let anything—or anyone—mess it up.

Good, but abrupt ending.
Revisado: 11-11-22
The ending was rather a rumor and it could’ve been developed further. Alternatively, an epilogue would’ve helped. But overall, I thought it was a good book.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Surprisingly Wonderful
Revisado: 10-30-22
When I started listening to this, I was skeptical. But, I continued and am so glad that I did! This is a wonderfully moving story, with intertwined stories (including that of an octopus) that all come together beautifully.

Historia
Just after midnight on April 15, 1912, the passenger steamship Carpathia receives a distress signal from the largest passenger liner ever built, RMS Titanic, which is on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. Captain Arthur Rostron is awakened to an enormous maritime emergency with little information to guide his actions in answering the call for help. Is the dire threat to the unsinkable Titanic accurate? His ship is more than four hours away; will Carpathia hold together if pushed to never-before-tested speeds?

Very slow start
Revisado: 10-17-22
I found this book very difficult to get into. It was very boring for the first half at least. I would have just returned it, but I kept thinking it would get better. It eventually did, but I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for it.

Sometimes hard to follow & ended suddenly
Revisado: 05-05-22
I enjoyed this book except that it was sometimes difficult to tell which character was speaking or being referred to. Also, the ending was too sudden, leaving it feeling unfinished. I get that there’s a sequel, but it’s still to abrupt.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.
