Historia
We all think we know the South. Even those who have never lived there can rattle off a list of signifiers: the Civil War, Gone with the Wind, the Ku Klux Klan, plantations, football, Jim Crow, slavery. But the idiosyncrasies, dispositions, and habits of the region are stranger and more complex than much of the country tends to acknowledge. In South to America, Imani Perry shows that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and that our understanding of its history and culture is the key to understanding the nation as a whole.

Great prose, distinctive breath and rhythm, this book not only travels to and from the South, but it's also a remarkable continuation of the great black writing of the US.

A great story from a great painter and poet.
Revisado: 12-23-23
Paul's prose is vivid, and the portrait she made of her relationship with Lucien Freud is complex. But what stands the most is her relationship with painting itself, the motives and the transformation of that relationship throughout her life.

Historia

Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Impressive narrative power
Revisado: 01-26-21
I loved how the narration expands, details, and opens to the mind and circumstances of Shakespeare's family. It goes full circle! Also, a marvelous reader, I couldn't stop listening.

Historia
In the city of Bogot, Antonio Yammara reads an article about a hippo that had escaped from a derelict zoo once owned by legendary Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. The article transports Antonio back to when the war between Escobar’s Medelln cartel and government forces played out violently in Colombia’s streets and in the skies above. Back then, Antonio witnessed a friend’s murder, an event that haunts him still. As he investigates, he discovers the many ways in which his own life and his friend’s family have been shaped by his country’s recent violent past.

Great narrator
Revisado: 03-08-20
The narrator is great, even his squirmy Spanish is somewhat lovely. The translation gives Vásquez a Belowish tone he doesn't necessarily have in Spanish. It's a good book, steady rhythm, stable masculinity.
