Historia
Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human.

Amazing work that stays with you
Revisado: 04-28-25
This is such a great collection of short stories, all deep and complex and often require a listen or three to understand them deeply. I would highly recommend getting this book in written form as well—though Saunders brings his personality to the reading, he’s definitely not a professional narrator, and having the text helped me get more out of it.

Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Great prose
Revisado: 04-17-25
I was born in 1977 and I think I understood 100% of the references in this book. It’s a good story about love and work. But I somehow didn’t fully connect with the characters, and found one of the tragic moments to be awkward and bumping. Maybe these dudes were just not my cup of tea.
Absolutely brilliant narrators.

Historia
For thousands of years, people have argued about whether humanity is selfish or generous, cruel or kind. But recently, our answers have changed. In 1972, half of Americans agreed that most people can be trusted; by 2018, only a third did. Different generations, genders, religions, and political parties can’t seem to agree on anything, except that they all think human virtue is evaporating.

Bait and switch
Revisado: 01-31-25
I love science books, especially those that support scientific skepticism, and I’m a liberal who is interested in differing viewpoints, so this book should have been my sweet spot.
I really liked the opening, and how the author connects to his late friend and colleague through the book who is the epitome of hope in a cynical world.
Unfortunately, the book’s uninspired politics clashed with his and his friend’s own research. The actual content is 75% science-free activism, uninterested in connecting with a diverse readership and ultimately making me wonder how many complex conversations the author truly had.

Audio porn can touch you where video porn can’t. Intimate, authentic, and hot — but is it also more ethical? Amelia Lander-Cavallo is a performer and accessibility consultant. They are also blind, queer, non-binary and sexual — and they want audio porn to get them off. Through interviewing hot-tongued audio porn creators and other disabled smut-searchers, Amelia explores how audio porn could be good as well as sexy.

Interesting exploration of specific audio fetishes
Revisado: 10-27-23
This show is a mostly enjoyable journey into the world of audio erotica with a focus on genderqueer people and/or people with disabilities, especially blindness. Throughout each episode is a continuous drumbeat of the host's obsession for finding "authentic" content that fits the narrator's identity and political framework. As a listener who has explored the topic a bit, something that is impossible ignore is that the host is perfectly describing having a specific fetish while ironically maligning other listeners' interests. Unfortunately, with the supposed hunt for inclusivity and authenticity, they ignored the broader audio erotica universe, making the audio world look far less broad and inclusive than it actually is. The podcast's production and the host's performance is solid and several interviews are excellent.

Words on the Move opens our eyes to the surprising backstories to the words and expressions we use every day. Did you know that silly once meant "blessed"? Or that ought was the original past tense of owe? Or that the suffix -ly in adverbs is actually a remnant of the word like? And have you ever wondered why some people from New Orleans sound as if they come from Brooklyn?

Historia
For decades, the specter of homosexuality haunted Washington. The mere suggestion that a person might be gay destroyed reputations, ended careers, and ruined lives. At the height of the Cold War, fear of homosexuality became intertwined with the growing threat of international communism, leading to a purge of gay men and lesbians from the federal government. In the fevered atmosphere of political Washington, the secret “too loathsome to mention” held enormous, terrifying power.

Historia
It's a report tempered by hard times. In "Matricide", Daum unflinchingly describes a parent's death and the uncomfortable emotions it provokes; and in "Diary of a Coma" she relates her own journey to the twilight of the mind. But Daum also operates in a comic register. With perfect precision, she reveals the absurdities of the marriage-industrial complex, of the New Age dating market, and of the peculiar habits of the young and digital.

Historia
Profanity has always been a deliciously vibrant part of our lexicon, an integral part of being human. In fact, our ability to curse comes from a different part of the brain than other parts of speech - the urgency with which we say "f--k!" is instead related to the instinct that tells us to flee from danger. Language evolves with time, and so does what we consider profane or unspeakable. Nine Nasty Words is a rollicking examination of profanity, explored from every angle: historical, sociological, political, linguistic.

Historia
Almost a decade ago, the first Bottoming Book taught tens of thousands of people that bottoming - being a submissive, masochist, slave, "boy" or "girl", or other BDSM recipient - is as much an art as topping. Since then, the growing popularity of BDSM, and the blossoming of the Internet as a source of information and connection, have created a whole new universe of possibilities for players.

Religious Trojan horse
Revisado: 08-17-18
There is some good technical knowledge, but I strongly suggest you read the last chapter first.
The final chapter explains the religious motivations and boundary problems that color every other chapter in the book. Sure, BDSM can be wonderful and transcendent, but the vast majority of us do not worship at a creepy orgy circle.
I’m deeply embarrassed that this is one of the frequently recommended introductory texts.
