As bad as it gets
Revisado: 03-11-25
The banality and endless repetition of travel booklet clichés is painful. The narration is slow and mechanical. 1.7x speed is recommended.

Historia
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

The book describes incredible human complexity of mental illness - schizophrenia
Revisado: 02-13-25
The book tells an authentic story about Galvin family where 6 brothers struggled with schizophrenia. It educates about this mental illness, about history of medical research and treatment approaches, and it helps to connect emotionally with what it meant for family members to live their very difficult, unique lives. Thank you!

Historia
Between the birth of Dante in 1265 and the death of Galileo in 1642, something happened that transformed the entire culture of Western civilization. Painting, sculpture, and architecture would all visibly change in such a striking fashion that there could be no going back on what had taken place. Likewise, the thought and self-conception of humanity would take on a completely new aspect. Sciences would be born - or emerge in an entirely new guise.

The narration is bad, very bad
Revisado: 11-09-24
The whole thing drones like a long legal document read in court. A strong, well-trained professional voice but without a slightest hint of modulation, let alone emotion. As level as a tabletop.
What's more, before embarking on recording a book on Italian renaissance, he did not bother to check the most basic rules of Italian pronunciation. He even managed to get the name Medici wrong.
I really tried but gave up somewhere in the middle.

Historia
The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

A masterpiece
Revisado: 02-19-22
The book is a masterpiece. I had read it many times in Russian and know half of it by heart. The translation is very good overall. Some flavor was inevitably lost but in relatively few places, so the book is in no way diminished. I had more problems with the narrator. He gave essentially the same voice to characters with totally different personalities. Also, I would think that before recording a translated book, the actor would spend a bit of time looking up the correct pronunciation of characters' names.

In The Soul of Care: The Moral Education of a Husband and a Doctor, Kleinman delivers a deeply humane and inspiring story of his life in medicine and his marriage to Joan, and he describes the practical, emotional and moral aspects of caretaking. He also writes about the problems our society faces as medical technology advances and the cost of health care soars but caring for patients no longer seems important.
