The members of this society were compelled by powerful visions to devote their lives to being contrarians. In simple terms, they did things backwards for the purpose of educating people on how to behave properly. A similar principle was seen on a popular t-shirt of the 1980s that said, “I’m not useless—I can be used as a bad example.”

I have enjoyed the development of this series until this book. The misogyny that Joe shows and that the author seems to think is cute or clever is an absolute turn off to me. I don't know any woman who would think it was cute or clever If someone acted like that towards her .
Using borderline stalking behavior further her plot is an insult. I won't read anymore for work.p

Is the main character a woman or a man?

I have to admit, the storyline kept pulling me back into this book, but the narration was so confusing I never knew if I was listening to the words and thoughts of a male character or a female character.
I would not recommend this book with this narrator. But I would imagine if you read the book you’d be fine. It’s a good story.

Too much before not enough after

The book was fascinating the storyline well written, but the sheer agony of the day today reality of these peoples lives was so painful to listen to.
My hope was that it would be balanced by vindication! But it felt like 4/5 of the book was there incredibly difficult up ringing and just a little tiny bit was what happened afterwards.
