Historia
On the streets of 1970s Brooklyn, a daily ritual goes down: the dance. Money is exchanged, belongings surrendered, power asserted. The promise of violence lies everywhere, a currency itself. For these children, Black, brown, and white, the street is a stage in shadow. And in the wings hide the other players: parents; cops; renovators; landlords; those who write the headlines, the histories, and laws; those who award this neighborhood its name. The rules appear obvious at first. But in memory’s prism, criminals and victims may seem to trade places.

Elf and Yoli are sisters. While on the surface Elfrieda's life is enviable (she's a world-renowned pianist, glamorous, wealthy, and happily married,) and Yolandi's a mess (she's divorced and broke, with two teenagers growing up too quickly), they are fiercely close - raised in a Mennonite household and sharing the hardship of Elf's desire to end her life.

One of the most moving, insightful, beautifully paced and written books I've ever known about mental illness and the intimacy of family.
The first person narrative creates an immediacy that is wrenching and real, always warm, compassionate.
The narration was perfect.

Revisado: 09-20-24
the performance is as good as the book - absolutely stellar. it is not a book about plot twists and characters, though both are conceived of beautifully; it is a book about ideas. ideas and notions of identity, memory, family, and how well we actually know ourselves and one another. stunning

gorgeous writing, beautifully performed.
Subtle, observant, just a really incredible, rare book.
I especially loved the description of Parkinsons, and both the anger and sorrow of Alan, the son.

tabloid fun

I must be unpopular in my old school opinions, but I still prefer writing that has some subtly to it, and follows to some extent the trope of "show don't tell."
The plot was on constant auto-review, as if the reader couldn't keep up.
I did like the ending, however...

Historia
When X—an iconoclastic artist and shape-shifter—falls dead in her office, her widow CM, wild with grief, hurls herself into writing X's biography. Though X was recognized as a crucial creative force of her era, she kept a tight grip on her life story. In CM's quest to unravel it, she opens a Pandora’s box of secrets and destruction. All the while, she immerses herself in the history of the Southern Territory, a fascist theocracy that split from the rest of the country after World War II, as it is finally, in the present day, forced into an uneasy reunification.

I loved most of this book. The characters are so very alive, vivid, and the story is complex but told clearly. I LOVED the reader. I thought it was a bit too long, perhaps needed some more winnowing, but it is a lovely book.

beautiful weaving of plot and character, time and setting.
Revisado: 05-20-24
O'Farrell has mastered the ability to create an incredibly detailed environment without an excess of language. She also seems to have no limit in what SORT of environmental she creates: place, time, country, or character, she makes even the most different seem immediate and real.
I adore the character of Claudette, and would welcome a sequel about her ;)

Then, while she is still mourning Graham intensely, she discovers a ruinous secret, one that will spiral her into darkness and force her to question whether she ever truly knew the man who loved her.

a gorgeously read novel, and the details of the characters feel so immediate they sometimes feel like a physical presence in the room.
Also a beautiful, aching depiction of marriage, loss, and what long love really can be in a person's life.

Historia
The Counterlife is about people enacting their dreams of renewal and escape, some of them going so far as to risk their lives to alter seemingly irreversible destinies. Wherever they may find themselves, the characters of The Counterlife are tempted unceasingly by the prospect of an alternative existence that can reverse their fate. Illuminating these lives in transition and guiding us through the book's evocative landscapes, familiar and foreign, is the mind of the novelist Nathan Zuckerman.
