Good and bad...
Revisado: 03-16-25
Some of the stories were good. Some were not. A couple were interesting and engaging, but a lot fell flat. Had to skip the last story altogether because the audio was so bad. It seemed as if only one side of most conversations were included and because i was missing so much information, I gave up listening.

Revisado: 03-11-23
I didn't find either of the characters likeable and the constant flopping back and forth between the past and the present kept pulling me out of the story.

A twisty retelling of an old favorite
Revisado: 02-10-23
Early on, it's clear that this is a tale all of us are familiar with, retold with a fresh, modern perspective. Although you'll recognize the players, the entire story has been caught up in the tornado and turned on its head. There's danger, intrigue, and laughs galore. I highly recommend it for anyone, like me, who loves a good suspenseful romance!

Historia
Growing up in Emerald Lakes, population 682, had been safe and comfortable. Running my own magic shop and making a living off my green witchcraft, I have no complaints. Sure, there’s my ex, who never understood the word "no", but there’s also the lovable and eccentric townspeople who feel more like one huge extended family, and let’s not forget my boy-crazed Gran who keeps us all on our toes. Strange, unnatural things are brewing in Emerald Lakes, and I can’t ignore the sinking suspicion that something life-changing is headed my way.

***Spoiler Alert***
Love the idea of a non-twig heroine. Loved the story idea, but it was poorly executed for me.
1. Heroine is coming out of an abusive relationship then dives right in with supposed BDSM styled relationships with 4 men at once (2 at a time), one of whom is a complete jerk until he's not for about a minute then she suddenly drops her panties for him, with NO warmup, communication, or getting to know them at all? It seemed like the author wanted to jump on what appears to be a BDSM bandwagon in books right now without really understanding the foundational tenets. A guy who likes to spank a partner's butt is NOT BDSM, it's spanking. A guy who thinks being a Dom means he's just a condescending a$$hole is NOT BDSM.
2. There's a sex scene between two of the men that just gets ridiculous. I have nothing against MM sex, I've read plenty of books where it's totally hot, but this seemed like drawn out filler.
3. A cliffhanger is one thing, but to end the book when NOTHING has been resolved is something I absolutely LOATHE. It's lazy writing, IMHO. To me, it's just a ploy to stretch a book into parts to make more money. Either write a proper series where you get something resolved in each book while still feeding an overarching plot line, or tighten it up and make it a little longer and only write one book. This alone has me sworn off buying any more books in the series. From the reviews I've read, the same thing happens with all of them.

Historia
When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed. Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed. Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her, and hers towards him. And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

This is a DNF for me
Revisado: 10-12-22
I'm 3 1/2 hours in and on Chapter 13 and am calling it quits. Thankfully, I got it on sale so I'm out less than $5. In 13 chapters a lot has happened but it's all just repetition. I find the FMC super boring and don't really like her at all. Her personality, what there is of it, is flat and immature.
I usually enjoy Susannah Jones, but a large part of my frustration comes from the way she pronounces Pestilence. It's as if she's combining petulance with the character's name so that it comes out Peschulance and I just can't take it anymore.

Good overall, but...
Revisado: 09-19-21
Have you ever gone to a seminar where they promise to give you all kinds of great information and while they do give you some choice nuggets, it morphs into a sales pitch for their program? That's kind of how I started to feel about this book. It started out great but then suddenly, the Rock Chicks enter the plot and there's so much pushing of the Rock Chicks stories that it left a bad taste in my mouth - Have you ready the Rock Chick books? You've really gotta read the Rock Chick books! Oh my God, I can't believe you haven't read the Rock Chick books! It seemed like they're pushed into the plot for the simple reason of push, push, push, pushing the reader to go buy all of the Rock Chick books. It stopped for a while, but then made another appearance toward the end of the book. Blech!
The bad taste was enough that I won't read any more of the books in this series. It also seems as if this author is one that tends to follow a formula for her books and each story is much the same with some customized deviations: Girl meets guy, girl runs into trouble, guy pushes in to help, girl tries to take it on by herself with her gal pals, guy rescues her from her delusions, guy/girl fall in love. I've never been a fan of those types of series where it's the same story over and over.

I should have paid more attention to the reviews
Revisado: 08-10-21
Instead of really reading the reviews, I just looked at the stars. When I started listening, I simply could NOT believe this book got over 100 perfect 5's across the board. When I started reading them, I realized that they were probably paid reviews by folks who'd never read the book. I couldn't even make it through the first story. The narrator's delivery was "wet", like she had to much spit in her mouth so it kept popping while she spoke and the delivery was completely overblown like a first year acting student.
The dialogue was juvenile and guess what, in the real world not everyone is built perfectly and not every guy has a huge member.
Returning, for sure.

Beautifully brutal and entertaining
Revisado: 06-29-21
The book is well titled as the characters are, indeed, ruthless. However, that doesn't keep you from engaging with them and wanting to see where the story goes. There is a full roster of characters, but it doesn't get tedious keeping up with them as I had experienced in other books of this type and the narrator does a great job of voicing each one.
I'm excited to get started on Book 2!

Going to slog through to the end
Revisado: 04-28-21
The first book was moderately interesting. I'm now about 3 hours from finishing the series and I will slog through to the end just to finish it, but overall, it's just bleh. You have to give your readers enough meat to cause them to suspend their disbelief and buy into what you're selling/writing. This was somewhat accomplished in the first book. But book 2 went off the rails.
***SPOILER ALERT***
I am just sick to death of Caroline and how she keeps stringing Owen along and hopes to SOMEHOW bring back a dead man for a passionate love affair. By the third book this has been going on for over 5 YEARS. I am sick of Owen's lack of spine. He should take Grant and his crow and go be an excellent physician again somewhere. I am sick of the whole complete lack of direction experienced by anyone other than running away from "itches". Poor Grant, to be floating along with two people without any sort of plan or wherewithall.
The only people I remotely find interesting are the two bad guys from the first book who chuck it all to open a B&B.

Enjoyed getting an update on Anna and Charles
Revisado: 03-26-21
I find this series entertaining and was glad this latest update kept things interesting. I was concerned after reading Smoke Bitten on the Mercy side of things because that one was flat and overall disappointing. I did feel that the whole thing between Bran and Leah was a bit disjointed and rushed. I mean, you've been told it's one thing over and over and over in previous books and suddenly it's all different smashed into the ending of this book.
One note is that, while I LOVE me some Holter Graham and am amazed at the folks who can even attempt to do such a variety of voices, but the consistency of voices changes a lot through the books and it's a bit disconcerting. Charles will sound one way in one paragraph and completely different a few sentences later.
Overall, a good read and I'll continue to follow.
