this book, though not awful, had little to no action. the first chapter, written in first person viewpoint, is hard to follow. the second chapter, suddenly changing to third person, is jarring.

I really don't get why so many five star ratings
Revisado: 05-03-17
I really don't get why there is an abundance of five-star ratings. It isn't the writing that is the problem with this story, it's the subject matter. Simon is basically imprisoned by Mitch, but it is what happens after that that I have a problem with. By the end of the story, in my opinion, Simon is suffering from Stockholm syndrome. It was not a good read for me, actually, I am surprised I made it to the end.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

I can't take it anymore!
Revisado: 07-29-16
Regardless of how good or bad a story is usually I can make it to the end of the book. Not so with this one, I am ten hours in and literally nothing significant has happened. It's not that it is a bad story, it's like reading the diaries of several very boring people at the same time. Nothing interesting has happened to them. They go to class, do homework, go to parties, make friends; none of that is bad, but is it a story? I want to read the rest, maybe sometime in the future I'll pick it up again, right now I can't take anymore of the dullness.

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Mr. Bliss' performance is the saving grace for TLP
Revisado: 08-27-15
Had David Benjamin Bliss not done such a great job of making this very predictable story engaging, I would have stopped listening within the first few hours. The story is totally devoid of originality, though that alone would not have turned me off. It also, has so many clichés and inconsistencies, not to mention the glaring changes in personality the main character displays throughout the story, makes it difficult to listen until the end. It was only DBB's characterizations that got me through. Also, all the characters in the book seemed to be of the European variety and only humanoid (not to mention being very male oriented, there is a grand total of three female characters, four if you count the second-in-command's wife who is, although referred to on several occasions, never seen). Now, I am not advocating for alien species or all female navy contingents, it's just that I am not sure how this can happen in such a vast empire. Somewhere there must be many more women and people of color. And I doubt that they would be completely like us. I also take issue with Commander Jonathan Radec’s (the main protagonist) superhuman status. I mean really, he can't out smart everyone and win every battle, it gets boring after a while. And OMG, if you mention one more time that Radec is tall, blond, handsome, strong cheekbones, an amazing physical appearance, and on top of that dressed in his crisp white navy uniform, I think I will scream. He is (literally) the White Knight of the story, ok, we got it Mr. Disney. The story, as a whole, is predictable, but that won’t stop me from listening to the next two in the series, I just hope that the author (Mike Smith) ups his game.

It's moving day at Chez Holmes. Somehow, against Kit's better instincts, he and J.X. are setting up house together. But while J.X. is off at a writing conference, Kit unpacks a crate that should contain either old books or new china. It doesn't. Within the mounds of Styrofoam popcorn is a dead body. A very dead body. There goes the neighborhood.

Kit is a hard pill to take.
Revisado: 02-01-15
Though I have never been let down by Josh Lanyon's ability to put together a good story, I have to say I really find the Kit character hard to take. 4 hours in and i was really tired of the whining and angst. By the end of the book I was really pushing myself to finish. Beyond that the story is well paced and thought out. I've read most of Mr. Lanyon's work and have never been disappointed. I just don't like Kit as a character.

Interesting story with a good narrator
Revisado: 08-22-12
I can't for the life of me figure out what previous reviewers were looking for in this book. So, because the book is so short, I listened to the book again, and still didn't get it. It is almost as if they wanted to read/hear a longer book, though it was clear that it’s only three hours long. For me this book was well written, and well read, with lots of action and character development. Obviously the character development is on the thin side, but knowing that the story is so short you expect that, right. I mean you won't be able to fully flesh out a character in 94 pages, so why judge so harshly. I found the book engaging and engrossing, and I think that that is because I wasn't expecting the author to write the next Lord of the Rings.

An amazing story, well worth my book credit.
Revisado: 08-22-12
I don't know what book the other reviewer(s) heard/read, but I found this book well worth a book credit. It certainly couldn't have been The Second Coming, by David H. Burton, because I found the plot compelling and gripping. When the book came to an end I became frustrated because I wanted more. Yes there are questions left unanswered at the end, hopefully they will be answered in the next book. Also, R. C. Bray is an amazing narrator who can really bring a story to life. Believe me this is a book that is well worth the money or credit. You can't lose with this book. Read it. You'll love it just like me. I'm trying to wait patiently for the next in the series.

Well writen and well read.
Revisado: 08-22-12
If you could sum up Scourge in three words, what would they be?
Finely crafted and easy to get into.
What other book might you compare Scourge to and why?
Terry Pratchett's Johnny and the Dead or any of his YA novels. Like Terry Pratchett's books the author presents an easy prose that allows the read to become totally engrossed in the story.
What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is a master of voice and tone. He gave every character just the right amount of vocal interest. He is awesome.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. though I listened while driving to Maine, so periodically I had to stop.
