it's lovely to have the audio at last and continuity with Joel Leslie! though i believe the author has said that more works in this world have been planned. but this is a wonderful conclusion to the story we've been following so far. i look forward to more, hopefully with the same reader.

a must listen

I've been excited for this book to come out in audio format for a while, and it was so much more than I could have imagined. The snapshots of people's lives over time were so heartfelt and real, and they create a such a vivid picture of life in the community at that time. If this is a standalone piece, it's excellent as is. But I also hope there's a sequel that captures what the next 5-10 years are like through the eyes of different people.

the book and its performance are only so-so. but it's free and audible picked it for me, so i wasn't opposed to listening. was an hour away from the ending and there's a casual line thrown out referencing Auschwitz that an MC makes a joke about. it's not a conversation but something he's thinking about and then goes on to make a joke out loud about being free to smoke and take showers. the character he's talking to doesn't get the "joke" because the context was internal dialogue. it caught my ear and struck me like, "what? maybe I missed something." played the scene back, and yep it was as weird and unnecessary as it had sounded to me originally. at that point, I stopped the playback. I'm not Jewish, but I don't need to be in order to recognize that as inappropriate. won't listen to this author again.

I can't say enough about how deeply i felt this book. i mean whew! it's a lot to take in. so much emotion poured into it, so honest and open. it expresses aspects of Blackness that as a Black person you have absolutely thought and felt from childhood on. things you absolutely know and have experienced. it takes all those things and articulates them in the most raw and touching ways. bravo! and truly the reading is *excellent* I'm telling anyone i can who has read but not heard it to also read it via audio. great job, Paul Mendez!

amazing

this is literally one of the best books I've ever read. so introspective and feeling and real. i hope there's another one particularly given the pandemic and how that would throw a wrench into all the plans that were made or on the horizon at the end of the book. that would truly be awesome. but the series is so good that honestly, if there's never another installment, it's still one of the best series I've ever read.

so happy to have a continuation of stories in this world. i will admit that i enjoyed the reader for the goblin emporer better, but this reader isn't at all bad. Mer Celehar has a busy and trying life! I always liked him as a character and was pleased to find that this story is about him and right after the events of the first book rather than a completely unrelated story.

a whole mess

i really wanted this to be good or at least interesting in concept, and i think it starts out pretty well. but it quickly starts to feel cobbled together out of common cliches and random ideas that aren't well thought out. some of it is just editing; for ex there are a lot of repeated statements. but a lot of it is poor story development. there are a lot of ideas that are introduced and go nowhere or become contradictory a chapter after they've appeared. it happened so often that by the end i wasn't really listening anymore. John Solo is a great reader as always, but even he couldn't make this sound good.

extremely well written and descrptive. the reader has an amazingly seductive voice, but the accents are frequently off. the reading is still great abd full of emotion regardless.
