The audio performance and the writing are some of the best on this service. What a fantastic little book. Highly recommended.

Historia
Naval Officer Jack Samson thought a posting to the frontier of human-inhabited space was the death blow to his career. He couldn't have been more wrong. A routine inspection of a small merchant vessel leads to devastating loss and the discovery of strange, fascinating objects. As astonishing discoveries unfold, a mysterious and hostile ship proves that Samson has a competitor in unlocking the secrets of an ancient alien civilization and that humanity might not be alone in the galaxy after all.

Characters, story, writing, and plot made for very young, dumb adults, I guess. Holy smokes this was terrible. A profoundly mediocre attempt.

Historia
Raine can see—and speak—to the dead, a gift that comes with a death sentence. All her life she has hidden, lied, and run to save her skin, and she’s made some spectacularly bad choices along the way. But it is a rare act of kindness—rescuing an injured woman in the snow—that becomes the most dangerous decision Raine has ever made. Dangerous because the woman is fleeing from Redwinter, the fortress-monastery of the Draoihn, warrior magicians who answer to no king, and who will stop at nothing to reclaim what she’s stolen.

Overcooked, boring internal turmoil
Revisado: 02-08-25
In case you are wondering: does this protagonist feel isolated and alone? is she depressed? Never fear the author reminds you every 3 minutes. Wait, does this protagonist feel isolated and alone? is she depressed? Never fear the author reminds you every 3 minutes....Seriously, this is not the death of virgil. Looking for some plot movement, character development, but no does this protagonist feel isolated and alone? is she depressed? Never fear the author reminds you every 3 minutes.
His debut trilogy was truly outstanding. I've tried now 5 times to keep this audiobook moving but it doesn't advance. And of course, every 7 minutes we learn she doesn't like "old men telling her what to do because she's her own girl" you go girl!
Just not a terribly good character lineup, or story or in general book. Feels like a forced kind of feminism that hits stale and reaching instead of just pushing a good story and letting the reader find the meaning.

Gripping yet unfinished and rushed
Revisado: 07-04-24
I never critique narrative or story or characters as those are largely subjective exercises in Me Like or Me Hate or Me Opinion which bores everyone to tears. That leaves the strength of the narration and intensity and inventiveness of the delivery to review.
The story is the one you want to read, but listen to? The humor and electric intensity of the first novel and narration in this series absolutely entertained the hell out of me. It cantered just this side of a brilliant gallop.
This narrator drops her accent throughout. The narrator never quite grasps the humor or delivers any punchlines.
The voice of the author as the original narrator for this character in the first novel nailed this character perfectly which is why I don't understand why he didn't just continue to narrate. Pay yourself twice, man.
I appreciate the author and the novel and while the narrator was not terrible, she did lack convincing consistency and driving intensity that can turn an audiobook into one the great forms of modern entertainment.
I'll buy the third novel regardless, but I'd like to put my vote in for bringing back author as narrator next time. Cheers.

Unexpectedly Brilliant!
Revisado: 03-10-22
You don't know what you have here when you start, but you quickly end up appreciating the quick narrative lines, the dialogue and the narrator.
Chris wooding with Retribution Falls was the first audiobook, I thought, this very well might be the single best entertainment in the world, far better than movies and better than television or even reading.
The author has me believing the same with this narration and book. I mean, hats off to him. I've listened to it now 3 times to completion and I love it. Kept me awake and laughing on a midnight drive from Munich to Rome.
I won't bother with narrative and characters and blah blah, because that's all subjective and not worth the critique. Incredibly entertaining and inventive. Well done.

Finally! We all win.
Revisado: 12-25-21
I've been hoping Nell pulls the trigger on this book for ages. I've read the trilogy. Lister is a top 5 performer. What can I say? Merry Christmas, I guess.
I don't bother with reviewing the story line. You don't read reviews for whether the main character follows some moral imperative or compromises this or that phony philosophy. You come here to read whether this is worth your money or not. Whether it is challenging and entertaining. It is. Thank you again writer and performer.

The Annurian Empire is disintegrating. The advantages it used for millennia have fallen to ruin. The ranks of the Kettral have been decimated from within, and the kenta gates, granting instantaneous travel across the vast lands of the empire, can no longer be used. In order to save the empire, one of the surviving Kettral must voyage beyond the edge of the known world through a land that warps and poisons all living things to find the nesting ground of the giant war hawks. Meanwhile, a monk turned con-artist may hold the secret to the kenta gates.

All around excellent
Revisado: 10-11-20
In general I don't like reading long reviews as they reveal more about the reviewers beliefs, politics, hang-ups, short-comings, boring pretensions, and banal observances than the books.
Buy this entire trilogy. Colin mAce. Story, world, characters, dialogue and tone set this apart as one of the genuinely original series of books in some time with a nice echo from some previous greats.

Historia
Things are finally looking good for Captain Frey and his crew. The Ketty Jay has been fixed up good as new. They've got their first taste of fortune and fame. And, just for once, nobody is trying to kill them. Even Trinica Dracken, Frey's ex-fiancée and long-time nemesis, has given up her quest for revenge. In fact, she's offered them a job - one that will take them deep into the desert heart of Samarla, the land of their ancient enemies. To a place where the secrets of the past lie in wait for the unwary. Secrets that might very well cost Frey everything.

Revisado: 02-16-20
I'm hard pressed to even begin the process of listening to the next and last book. I don't want the ride to end. I genuinely adore these books: The plot, the characters, the dialogue, the growth of the characters, the narrator, they all combine to make a remarkable book and series.
Rupert may be the single best english speaking narrator in the business. Strike that, Rupert IS the best.
I recommend this book and this series to anyone who can hear.

Historia
Darian Frey is down on his luck. He can barely keep his squabbling crew fed and his rickety aircraft in the sky. Even the simplest robberies seem to go wrong. It's getting so a man can't make a dishonest living any more. Enter Captain Grist. He's heard about a crashed aircraft laden with the treasures of a lost civilisation, and he needs Frey's help to get it. There's only one problem. The craft is lying in the trackless heart of a remote island, populated by giant beasts and subhuman monsters.

Another fantastic work by CW and RD.
Revisado: 11-19-19
I wrote a review about Retribution Falls after I heard it making it clear I felt it was one of the single best forms of pure entertainment in any genre that I have ever experienced. The Black Lung missed that top end excitement of discovering for the first time something wonderful you never knew existed but adds an emotional depth needed for characters to grow and develop into new and better centerpieces for the next stories.
Rupert easily the best narrator Americans are not allowed to hear (the name of the wind) and perhaps the best narrator full stop.
This book is for those looking to escape for a laugh or a cry into a world of gamblers, cultists, drunks and cut throats...basically your average group of friends.
