In 1851, 17-year-old Roan arrives at the Mill House as a ward - one of three, all with something to hide from their new guardian. 1583. Hermione, a new young bride, accompanies her husband to the wilds of North Wales where he plans to build the largest water mill and mansion in the area.

Good narration, anemic plot and pacing

It was too long without much of a payoff in the end. I kept listening hoping it would be worth it in the end... but it just wasn't.

Historia
Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

I thought it couldn't get better
Revisado: 08-06-18
I didn't think that Cannery Row could be better than the first time that I read it years ago. The charming characters, the zest of humor, and all with Steinbeck's effortless descriptions. However, having Jerry Farden interpret these characters has brought out a new face of these characters for me. I didn't think I could like this book more than I already did, but listening to it has made it an even more beloved novel for me.

Historia
The truth is still out there. The iconic hit that had millions searching for UFOs back in the 90s is now an exhilarating audio event, only from Audible. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunite as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, joining an ensemble of original cast members in an out-of-this-world production.

Overall, it was uneven
Revisado: 08-13-17
I have not watched the X-Files but I am a big sci-fi and fantasy fan. I have listened to a lot of radio drama in my lifetime so I wasn't turned off by the fact that this wasn't a traditionally narrated audio book. However, this was just not as well done as I had hoped for.
The voice acting was all over the map. Some of it was fantastic and some of it was just awful. The surprising part was that it wasn't any particular character that was bad or good, with the exception of Scully and the cigarette man which were pretty great through the whole thing. A fair number of the side characters were just wooden and lifeless and some of Mulder's work was just emotionless. I realize that is somewhat Mulder's character but what works vocally for television may not have the same effectiveness when it is just audio.
The sound effects were pretty good. They added to the atmosphere and rarely got in the way of the experience.
Some of the dialog was... not great... I don't know. For example, at one point a man screams in agony and then says, "You put out your cigarette in my eye!" I feel that this could have been handled in a less clumsy manner. Screams of agony, sounds of burning/sizzling flesh, shouts of, "My eye!" and then maybe the attacker saying something about how he has another cigarette for the other eye if he doesn't cooperate.
So, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either. I don't think I'll be getting the next installment come October.
