Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

READ THIS!!!
Revisado: 05-24-18
READ THIS!!! Listen to this!!! It’ll be one of the most eye opening accounts of what it’s like to be a biracial child, as well as a biracial child living in a very prejudice society. This isn’t an angry account of what happens, though. It’s an insightful commentary that explains why Noah is who Noah is, and how to learn and grow from your experiences rather than let them break you down!

So dull and underdeveloped I gave up in 1.5 hours
Revisado: 04-09-18
Would you try another book from Jeff VanderMeer and/or the narrators?
Yes, I probably would. There's definitely and imagination and skill there.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Unfortunately, I didn't get far enough in to really know what it's redeeming qualities were. The story opened up with a group of people walking into Area X and thats just about it. I understand that it was intentional, it was just hard to see the world through the character's eyes because so little detail was given. It was all plot, no substance. This could have been fixed with the narrator, though. The narrator could have done voices that help differentiate the main character from the others. Instead, it was read in a very flat monotone.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Well, it made a movie so it's gotta be somewhat good later lol.
Any additional comments?
I honestly am really not that picky with books. An engaging plot with stereotypical characters will be enough for me to push through. I just kept asking myself, "What is the whole purpose of the story? Why did it matter to the characters? What were their personalities? etc." I just had to give this one up when there were more questions than answers, and because there were so few hints that the motivations of the characters would ever be explored.

Meg Murry can't help but be worried when her six-year-old brother, Charles Wallace, announces there are dragons in the vegetable garden. He's so bright, and so different from other kids, he's getting bullied at school, and he is also strangely, seriously ill. But Charles Wallace is right about the dragons - actually a friendly entity who has come to help Charles Wallace fight his sickness, and to take Meg and her friend Calvin O'Keefe on a terrifying, wonderful journey into galactic space - where they must battle the force of evil to save Charles Wallace, and themselves.

Powerful and entertaining. Also a little out there
Revisado: 03-31-18
I wish that this book was required reading for every single kid in school. I don’t think a book could mirror the current political climate anymore and I such a healthy way. With lessons of growth, change, and transformation mix into the importance of maturing and doing what is right over what is comfortable and easy, it very lovingly urges every reader to be more wise, kind, and loving. Even though the plot and world was a little out there and very metaphysical, the author managed to ground it in such a way that made it feel very real. Trust me, you want to read this book, and you want to listen to this audible version.

Story is good, performance cringeworthy.
Revisado: 03-26-18
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The story was there for sure, but you have to really like dark and demonic lol. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good Stephen king novel, and I'm not easily spooked, but sometimes I felt dirty walking away from a listening session. This was probably the intent lol. At times I really enjoyed it...other times I shook my head with a resounding "NOPE! NOPE! NOPE!"
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The keys and the rules the set were by far the best part. I kept wanting to know more an more about them. The least interesting part for me were the possessions...and I watched the conjuring a couple of times...this was a big nope for me.
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
The performance was so cringeworthy at times. I attribute it to the script which at times felt natural. Dialogue is a hard thing to nail as a writer and I felt like it missed the mark. You kinda have to listen to it to get what I'm saying lol.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
A booty ton of dread. I wasn't looking for a safe book but...I'm kinda wore out now lol.
Any additional comments?
I think part of my dislike also came from the fact that I was expecting an audio book and not an audio dramatization. Once that through me off it was hard to flow with it. Do I regret getting it? Nah. It was...It was just a lot lol.

Great story! bored to death with male narrator
Revisado: 03-08-18
So, when I first Picked up this book I loved the first half of the story. However, I got really busy and switch to this audiobook. I found myself enjoying the story way less because of the male narrator. The male narrator reads with more attitude than acting. He has this laid-back, man in an armchair, with a pipe in his mouth sound, but I never felt a difference in his inflections in different parts of the story. The humorous part sounded just like the tragic parts. The tragic parts sounded just like the horror parts. And the horror parts sounded just like the slice of life parts. I had a hard time figuring out what reaction I was supposed to have at different parts in the story. I eventually became so frustrated with it that I was listening to the story at double pace. Funny thing is, I actually enjoyed it more at the double pace.

Boring and pointless
Revisado: 01-24-18
I gave up on this 3 hours into it and just couldn’t anymore. I went into this expecting to learn something new, but after each lesson I asked myself, what did I learn? Not a single thing was my answer. This is for people who don’t know the basics of how to tell a story.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.
