this was a fantastic book. I loved every minute of it. Neville Jason is a phenomenal narrator. and I am very picky about narrators.

the story was engrossing. I never lost interest at all, but remain fascinated until the end. the narration was superb. overall, just an excellent read.

too much for me

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but...WTH? I could not make head nor tails out of this book. I lasted about 30 minutes before I gave up. too highbrow? too ancient? it just seemed like word salad to me. but I did enjoy Simon Vance's voice and performance.

I listened to the whole thing, so that's something. I thought it was interesting. I got a little annoyed with Clint Howard bragging about himself, but of course Ron Howard was his usual likable self. it was an engaging story, but nothing earth-shattering about it. I wasn't blown away like some reviewers.

I just really didn't enjoy this book very much. I didn't enjoy The narrator/author's voice. I found the storyline kind of juvenile. just not a great book.

misogyny and objectification abound

first of all, Will Patton did an astounding job of narrating. second of all, I enjoy Bukowski's writing immensely for the most part. he is an excellent, uniquely talented writer, and very funny sometimes. but the misogyny and objectification of women is truly unfortunate. also, if you plan on listening to this book, get ready for a lot of sleazy nastiness.

Mr. Narrator...WTH?

so this story was just okay. kind of dumb. but the reason I rated it so low is because for some reason the narrator decided to make a female warrior character sound like a cross between a 60 year old, male, New York cabbie, and James Cagney playing Al Capone. I can't imagine what in the world he was thinking. what woman sounds like that? if you can't manage a believable woman's voice, don't narrate a book with a prominent female character. it became annoying and very distracting real quick.
