Historia
It has a dark past - one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself "Murderbot." But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Even better than the first
Revisado: 07-02-18
The followup to Wells' Nebula-winning All Systems Red is even better than book one. I loved Murderbot even more this time around. Murderbot makes a friend, ART, and that relationship is interesting to watch play out. Even as Murderbot changes as a character, it still has very nonhuman thoughts just at the point where we think it has become more human (eg, the moment at the end where we think Murderbot has made a new friend).
I can't wait for book 3.
As for the length, I don't know what people are complaining about. Audible doesn't hide how long the book is; it's right there. This is a novella series published by a company that is dominating the novella market with amazing titles (check out Nnedi Okorafor's Binti and Matt Wallace's Envy of Angels next). Don't complain about something because you didn't pay attention.

useful, if you can get past the casual bigotry
Revisado: 05-07-12
What did you like best about How to Write Selling Humor? What did you like least?
I enjoyed the academic look at humor. There's some really interesting stuff in there.
What was most disappointing about Peter Mehlman and Mel Helitzer ’s story?
The casual sexism, racism, and homophobia when it comes to humor. The talks are from the 80s, and delight in telling people that "fruit" is now a synonym for homosexual and "women and prudes don't like too many sex jokes."
Which scene was your favorite?
The Seinfeld stories.
Did How to Write Selling Humor inspire you to do anything?
Made me realize that approaching humor academically won't work in my writing.
Any additional comments?
Overall I was disappointed in this.

Historia
Alek and Deryn are on the last leg of their round-the-world quest to end World War I, reclaim Alek’s throne as Prince of Austria, and finally fall in love. The first two objectives are complicated by the fact that their ship, the Leviathan, continues to detour farther away from the heart of the war (and crown). And the love thing would be a lot easier if Alek knew Deryn was a girl. (She has to pose as a boy in order to serve in the British Airforce.) And if they weren’t technically enemies. The tension thickens as the Leviathan steams toward New York City with a homicidal lunatic on board....

Fantastic trilogy ending
Revisado: 11-03-11
I loved Leviathan, but thought Behemoth lagged at bit. Goliath has restored my faith in this story. While this book had a couple of odd, unbelievable bits (the Tesla storyline was odd), the main plots of: Deryn's secret, her future as a soldier, Alec's future as a prince, and their relationship are quite satisfactory. We see more of the lady boffin and Deryn gets to be quite adventurous and daring. Alan Cumming is, as always, a fantastic narrator. Highly recommended (but read/listen to the first two books first!)

Painfully flat
Revisado: 11-03-11
I'm a sucker for Christmas stories, but I hate flat, saccharine tales. The characters are one-sided, the story is predictable, and when things get "tense" the author tells us the events in a distant sort of way, not engaging us, not making us feel the worry, the cold. Without spoiling too much, two characters fall asleep in the snow with no hypothermia or frostbite, which destroyed the story for me. The characters were flat, the story convenient and unbelievable, and the writing was lazy.
